Ikeda, Keiichi published the artcileRh(I)-Catalyzed cyclocarbonylation of enynes with glyceraldehyde: an available carbonyl source derived from sugar alcohols, Name: 1,4-Dioxaspiro[4.5]decane, the publication is Synlett (2012), 23(3), 393-396, database is CAplus.

Catalytic cyclocarbonylation reactions using a glyceraldehyde derivative as a carbonyl source are described. The rhodium(I)-catalyzed reaction of enynes, e.g., H2C:CHCH2OCH2CCR ( R = Ph, n-Bu, CMe3), with glyceraldehyde acetonide I gave bicyclic cyclopentenones, e.g., II, as the products. This presents an interesting use of a sugar alc. derived carbon resource as well as a convenient procedure for the cyclocarbonylation of enynes.

The transformations of 1,2-diols over perfluorinated resinsulfonic acids (Nafion-H) were studied and correlations were examined between the structures of the investigated diols, the possible dehydration routes and the catalytic properties of Nafion-H. Comparisons were also made between the catalytic properties of Nafion-H and NaHX zeolite. Because of its stronger acidity, Nafion-H functions at temperatures considerably lower than those for the usual dehydrating catalysts, e.g., the zeolites. As is well established for other solid electrophilic catalysts, the dehydration of 1,2-diols mainly proceeds via the pinacol rearrangement. The lower temperatures and the stronger acidity of Nafion-H strongly favor the pinacol rearrangement vs. 1,2-elimination. The reaction conditions are also advantageous for the formation of substituted 1,3-dioxolanes in a secondary condensation step between the unreacted diol and the primarily formed carbonyl compounds Nafion-H gradually deactivates during long use, but it can be partially reactivated by washing with acetone.

A number of compounds isolated from various plant species were tested for their ability to affect the mobility of zoospores of A. cochlioides which causes root rot in spinach (Spinacia oleracea). Compounds may act as attractants, repellents or stimulants of zoospore movement or they may halt movement by causing the spore to clump and settle. Bioassays revealed compounds with these modes of action, as well as some which acted directly on the fungus.

A drop method using fluorinated hydrocarbon (FC-72) was successfully applied as a quant. assay to determine the threshold concentration of cochliophilin A, a potent Aphanomyces cochlioides zoospore attractant originally isolated from spinach roots. This method revealed that the number of zoospores attracted to droplets containing cochliophilin A increased with time, until approx. 60 to 90 s after injection of the droplet into a zoospore suspension. The threshold concentration, above which cochliophilin A was able to function as a zoospore attractant, was determined to be ∼3.0×10-9 M. Interestingly, zoospores attracted to droplets containing cochliophilin A at a concentration greater than 1.1×10-7 M massed on the surface of the droplets, a behavior that was quite similar to that observed on the root surface of host plants. This result suggested that the drop method would be useful not only as a quant. assay of chemotaxis, but also as a technique to investigate the mechanism of zoospore massing.

Lithium and magnesium enolates of cyclohexanone undergo palladium-catalyzed allylic alkylations under mild conditions. Diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity are observed when the diphenyl- and dimethyl-substituted allylic substrates are reacted with cyclohexanone or Et mesityl ketone. The lithium enolates of cyclohexanone, cyclopentanone and α-tetralone lead to the alkylations products in an enantioselective manner. Axially chiral biphenyl- and binaphthyl-bisphosphanes provide high enantioselectivity and/or diastereoselectivity. In the case of the lithium enolates, the presence of lithium chloride is also crucial to reactivity and stereoselectivity. The stereochem. outcome of the allylic alkylation of cyclohexanone and acetophenone has been investigated by the palladium-catalyzed reaction of their lithium enolates with the cis/trans isomeric alkenes. It turns out that the preformed, non-stabilized enolates attack π-allyl-palladium complexes generated in situ from the face opposite to the noble metal thus following the stereochem. pathway of soft, stabilized carbanions.
