Comparison of hydrogen sulfide transport properties in fluorinated and nonfluorinated polymers

Permeability coefficients of hydrogen sulfide in fluorinated polymers are anomalously low when compared to its permeability in nonfluorinated polymers. As a result, fluoropolymer membranes have unusual selectivities for gas pairs involving H2S. For example, while the mixture CO2/H2S selectivity is 0.66 for nonfluorinated, rubbery poly( dimethylsiloxane), this selectivity is 8.0 for a fluoroelastomer composed of tetrafluoroethylene, perfluoromethyl vinyl ether, and perfluoro-8-cyano-5-methyl-3,6-dioxa-1-octene (TFE/PMVE/ 8CNVE) and 27 for a glassy, cyclic perfluoroether (Cytop) under similar test conditions. The low H2S permeability in fluoropolymers is caused primarily by unexpectedly low H2S solubility in the fluorinated polymer matrices. For instance, H2S solubility in a Teflon AF copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and 2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4,5difluoro- 1,3-dioxole is approximately 5 times lower than the value predicted by a correlation of solubility with gas critical temperature. This low solubility is not related to penetrant size or condensability effects but rather is caused by unfavorable molecular interactions between H2S and fluoropolymers. As a result of this unusual solubility behavior, fluorinated glassy polymers are more resistant to H2S-induced plasticization than nonfluorinated glasses. These findings may prove useful in emerging membrane applications that involve H2S, such as natural gas treatment.

Piperine-like alkamides from Piper nigrum induce BDNF promoter and promote neurite outgrowth in Neuro-2a cells

Black pepper (Piper nigrum) contains a variety of alkamides. Among them, piperine has been reported to have antidepressant-like effects in chronically stressed mice, but little is known about the biological activity of other alkamides. In this study, we investigated the effects of alkamides from white pepper (P. nigrum) on neuronal cells. Twelve alkamides were isolated from white pepper MeOH extracts, and their chemical structures were identified by NMR and MS analyses. The compounds were subjected to assays using the luciferase-reporter gene under the control of the BDNF promoter or cAMP response element in mouse neuroblastoma Neuro-2a cells. In both assays, marked reporter-inducing activity was observed for piperine (1), piperettine (2) and piperylin (7), all of which have in common an (E)-5-(buta-1,3-dien-1-yl)benzo[d] [1, 3] dioxole moiety. Piperettine (2) and piperylin (7) tended to increase endogenous BDNF protein levels. Furthermore, piperylin (7) promoted retinoic acid-induced neurite outgrowth. These results suggest that piperylin (7), or analogues thereof, may have a beneficial effect on disorders associated with dysregulation of BDNF expression, such as depression.

Temperature dependence of positron annihilation lifetimes in high permeability polymers: Amorphous teflons AF

The microstructure of the free volume and its temperature dependence were studied for amorphous Teflon AF 1600 (T-g = 160 degrees C) and AF 2400 (T = 240 degrees C). These copolymers consist of tetrafluoroethylene and 2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4,5-difluoro-1,3-dioxole units and are used as highly permeable membrane materials. We employed positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) to investigate the free volume. From the lifetime spectra analyzed with the routine LT9.0 the hole size distribution, its mean size and width were calculated. Results obtained from a three and a four component analysis of lifetime spectra are compared. Both polymers show very large orthopositronium lifetimes tau(3) (corresponding to large hole sizes) and glass transitions in tau(3) near the expected values. AF 2400 shows an unusual behavior characterized by a nonlinear temperature dependence of the orthopositronium lifetime, extraordinarily large mean values of tau(3) and the widths of the lifetime distributions sigma(3). Possible explanations for this will be discussed in relation to the microstructure of the copolymer.

Computations were carried out employing the restricted Hartree-Fock (RHF) and density functional theory (DFT) methods to investigate the geometries and energies for the 1,3-dithiole-2-thione (DTT), 1,3-dithiole-2-one (DTO), 1,3-dioxole-2-thione (DOT), and 1,3-dioxole-2-one (DOO) molecules and their radical cations. The geometrical parameters of all the four molecules suggest a finite extent of extended conjugation across the molecules. The radical cations of the DTT and DOT molecules exhibit increased extent of conjugation compared to their neutral analogues. However, on going from the neutral DOO and DTO molecules to their radical cations, the extent of conjugation across the ions decreases and two unsaturated sites become isolated from each other. Requirement of the relaxation energy for the formation of radical cation is much lower for the DTT and DOT molecules compared to that for the DOO and DTO molecules. Smaller relaxation energy requirement favors minimal resistance to charge transport along the molecular stacking. Therefore, it is speculated that the DTT and DOT molecules are better molecular conductors as compared to the DOO and DTO molecules.

Structural, morphological, wettability and thermal resistance properties of hydro-oleophobic thin films prepared by a wet chemical process

The structural properties of fluorine containing polymer compounds make them highly attractive materials for hydro-oleophobic applications. However, most of these exhibit low surface energy and poor adhesion on the substrates. In the present investigation, crack free, smooth and uniform thin films of poly [4,5-difluoro-2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-dioxole]-co-tetrafluoroethylene (TFD-co-TFE) with good adhesion have been deposited by wet chemical spin-coating technique on polished AISI 440C steel substrates. The as-deposited films (xerogel films) have been subjected to annealing for I h at different temperatures ranging from 100 to 500 degrees C in an argon atmosphere. The size growth of the nano-hemispheres increased from 8 nm for xerogel film to 28 nm for film annealed at 400 degrees C. It was found that as the annealing temperature increased from 100 to 400 degrees C, nano-hemisphere-like structures were formed, which in turn have shown increase in the water contact angle from 122 degrees to 147 degrees and oil (peanut) contact angle from 85 degrees to 96 degrees. No change in the water contact angle (122 degrees) has been observed when the films deposited at room temperature were heated in air from 30 to 80 degrees C as well as exposed to steam for 8 days for 8 h/day indicating thermal stability of the film. Eco-sustainable synthesis and biological evaluation of 2-phenyl 1,3-benzodioxole derivatives as anticancer, DNA binding and antibacterial agents

The current research and development scenario in medicinal chemistry demands small molecules synthesized in a simple, fast and effective way with enhanced activity and fewer side effects than the existing ones. Therefore, one-pot, microwave assisted green and efficient synthesis of a series of derivatives belonging to 2-phenyl 1,3-benzodioxole (1a-14a) and 2-phenyl 1,3-benzo-dioxole-4-ol (1b-14b) class were carried out and subsequently investigated for their anticancer, antibacterial and DNA binding potential. Compound 3c proved to be the most active one among the screened derivatives possessing anticancer and antibacterial potency greater than the standard reference compound (cisplatin and cinoxacin for anticancer and antibacterial activity, respectively). The most active compound in terms of DNA binding capacity was found to be 5b. A rewarding feature of the work is a facile, convenient, eco friendly one step synthesis of compounds demonstrating attenuated activity against cancer and bacterial cell with an inherent potential of binding to DNA. Subsequently, a hit molecule for further anticancer, antibacterial (compound 3c) and DNA binding studies (compound 5b) was also identified. (C) 2014 King Saud University.
