Permeability of amorphous AF teflons to ozone

The permeability of glassy polymers to ozone was measured for the first time. The measurements were made on amorphous AF Teflons (DuPont), the copolymers of bis(trifluoromethyl-4,5-difluoro-1,3-dioxole) and tetrafluoroethylene with a cyclic comonomer content of 87 (AF2400) and 65 (AF1600) mol %, at 20-60 degrees C and an ozone partial pressure of 0-5.5 kPa in an ozone-oxygen mixture. It was shown that the obtained permeability coefficients depended neither on the amount of ozone in the mixture nor on the polymer film thickness (5-15 mu m) and were equal to 2160 and 525 Barrer (at 20 degrees C) for Teflon AF2400 and AF1600, respectively. The temperature dependences of permeability coefficients are qualitatively different for individual copolymers. The permeability of Teflon AF2400 decreased with increasing temperature (the apparent activation energy of permeability is negative, -9.3 kJ/mol), whereas normal behavior was observed for Teflon AF1600, i.e., the permeability coefficient grew with temperature. (The activation energy of permeability is 6.4-7.0 kJ/mol for films of various thickness.) This difference is due to an abnormally low activation energy of diffusion in AF2400, which has a high free volume.

Acute liver failure (ALF) is a relatively rare liver disorder that leads to the massive death of hepatocytes. Our previous study reported that a novel small-molecule agent, (E)-5-(2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-((2,4-dioxothiazolidin-5-ylidene)methyl)phenyl)-5-methyl-7,7′-dimethoxy-4,4′-bibenzo[d][1,3]dioxole-5,5’-dicarboxylate (7k), possessed potent anti-inflammatory activity. In the present study, we further evaluated the therapeutic effects of 7k on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ALF and investigated the mechanisms of action. Our results demonstrated that 7k inhibited the migration of RAW264.7 macrophages, blocked the activity of nuclear factor-kappa B protein, and dose-dependently down-regulated the production of interleukin (IL)-1 beta, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and IL-6 as well as their corresponding mRNAs in RAW264.7 cells. Oral administration of 7k at a dose of 50 mg/kg significantly suppressed the serum level of enzyme activity and prevented the damage of liver tissue in D-galactosamine/LPS-induced ALF. Treatment with 7k also remarkably blocked the increase in the number of CD11b(+)- and CD68(+)-positive cells in the liver, and in vivo nuclear factor-kappa B activity, known to regulate inflammatory responses in many cell types, was effectively inhibited. The serum concentrations and hepatic mRNA expression of proinflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor-alpha, IL-1 beta, and IL-6 were markedly downregulated in mice by the treatment of 7k. In summary, 7k alleviated the development and progression of D-galactosamine/LPS-induced ALF by inhibiting macrophage infiltration and regulating the expression of cytokines.

The ring-puckering potential energy function and theoretical calculations for silacyclopent-2-ene-d(0) and 1,1-d(2) and the difluoro and dichloro derivatives

High level ab initio and DFT calculations have been carried out for silacyclopent-2-ene and its 1,1-d(2), 1,1-difluoro, and 1,1-dichloro derivatives. The previously published far-infrared spectra of the ring-puckering vibration, which had been interpreted to be characteristic of a rigid planar molecule, have been reanalyzed for the hydride and 1,1-d(2) derivative. Both the spectra and the theoretical calculations show the molecule to have a small barrier to planarity. The experimental data analyzed with a Gaussian barrier produce a barrier of 49 cm(-1) as compared to a value of 47 cm(-1) computed using the CCSD/6-311++G(d,p) basis set. The experimental value for the deuteride was determined to be 41 cm(-1) from the one-dimensional approximation. All MP2 and DFT computations for the 1,1-difluoro derivative predict a planar structure whereas the MP2 computation when used with triple-zeta basis set predicts a barrier of 13 cm(-1) for the chloride. Vibrational frequencies were also computed for these molecules and compared to experimental results for the characteristic frequencies for these types of molecules. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. Synthesis of beta-aryl-gamma-lactones and relationship: Structure – antifeedant and antifungal activity

Eighteen racemic beta-aryl-gamma-lactones derived from simple aromatic aldehydes have been obtained in the chemical synthesis. Iodolactones (5c and 6c) were synthesized from (E)-4-(benzo[d][1′,3′]-dioxol-5′-yl)-but-3-en-2-one (1). Reductive dehalogenation of iodolactones 5a-c and 6a-c afforded gamma-ethyl-gamma-lactones (7a-c, 8a-c) whereas the unsaturated lactones (9a-c, 10a-c) were obtained by dehydrohalogenation of iodolactones. All synthesized lactones were fully characterized by spectroscopic data (NMR, IR, HRMS) and subjected to the tests on the antifeedant activity towards Tribolium confusum, Trogoderma granarium and Sitophilus granaries as well to the tests on the antifungal activity towards four Fusarium species. The biological tests allowed to find some relationships between the structure and biological activity of the compounds studied. gamma-Ethyl- gamma-lactones 7a-c, 8a-c and unsaturated lactones 9a-c, 10a-c were usually stronger antifeedants than their parent iodolactones 5a-c and 6a-c. trans-Iodolactones 6a-c were more active than cis isomers 5a-c both in antifeedant and antifungal assays. The structure of aromatic substituent was the key factor in antifungal activity. The lactones with benzo [d][1,3]dioxole ring (5c, 6c, 7c, 8c, 9c) were the most active whereas those with unsubstituted benzene ring exhibited almost no activity.

High transport parameters and free volume of perfluorodioxole copolymers

Permeability (P) and diffusion (D) coefficients of perfluoro-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxole-tetrafluoroethylene copolymers were determined with respect to different gases (He, H-2, O-2, N-2, CO2, hydrocarbons C-1-C-3). The copolymers with large content of perfluorodioxole comonomer exhibit high permeability with respect to lighter gases comparable to that of poly(trimethylsilyl propyne). However, the copolymers studied are much more permselective than the latter polymer. Free volume as estimated via Bondi’s method and free volume size distribution parameters which were determined by means of positron annihilation lifetimes (PAL) method are also unusually high if compared with other glassy polymers. A novel correlation of the P and D values, as well as of the solubility coefficients S with the PAL parameter tau(4)I(4) are reported.

Electrical conductivity of thin-film composites containing silver nanoparticles embedded in a dielectric fluoropolymer matrix

Thin-film nanocomposites, consisting of silver nanoparticles embedded in a dielectric fluoropolymer matrix (poly[4,5-difluoro-2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-dioxole-co-tetrafluoroethylene]), were synthesized using vapor-phase co-deposition. The electrical conductivity of these composites was measured in-situ as a function of film thickness at various metal concentrations. At low metal concentrations (< 30%), dielectric behavior and very little change with film thickness were observed. At moderate to high silver loadings (30-80%) a large increase in electrical conductivity was observed as the films grew thicket. As the thickness increased further, the conductivity flattened out. At very high silver content (> 90%), fragmented fractal nanoclusters were able to further interconnect to achieve the percolation process and eventually evolve into a metallic continuum with dielectric polymer inclusions.
