Experimental Evidence of Dioxole Unimolecular Decay Pathway for Isoprene-Derived Criegee Intermediates

Ozonolysis of isoprene, one of the most abundant volatile organic compounds emitted into the Earth’s atmosphere, generates two four-carbon unsaturated Criegee intermediates, methyl vinyl ketone oxide (MVK-oxide) and methacrolein oxide (MACR-oxide). The extended conjugation between the vinyl substituent and carbonyl oxide groups of these Criegee intermediates facilitates rapid electrocyclic ring closures that form five-membered cyclic peroxides, known as dioxoles. This study reports the first experimental evidence of this novel decay pathway, which is predicted to be the dominant atmospheric sink for specific conformational forms of MVK-oxide (anti) and MACR-oxide (syn) with the vinyl substituent adjacent to the terminal O atom. The resulting dioxoles are predicted to undergo rapid unimolecular decay to oxygenated hydrocarbon radical products, including acetyl, vinoxy, formyl, and 2-methylvinoxy radicals. In the presence of O-2, these radicals rapidly react to form peroxy radicals (ROO), which quickly decay via carbon-centered radical intermediates (QOOH) to stable carbonyl products that were identified in this work. The carbonyl products were detected under thermal conditions (298 K, 10 Torr He) using multiplexed photoionization mass spectrometry (MPIMS). The main products (and associated relative abundances) originating from unimolecular decay of anti-MVK-oxide and subsequent reaction with O-2 are formaldehyde (88 +/- 5%), ketene (9 +/- 1%), and glyoxal (3 +/- 1%). Those identified from the unimolecular decay of syn-MACR-oxide and subsequent reaction with O-2 are acetaldehyde (37 +/- 7%), vinyl alcohol (9 +/- 1%), methylketene (2 +/- 1%), and acrolein (52 +/- 5%). Peroxidic perfluoropolyethers (PFPEs) are industrial intermediates used by Solvay Solexis for the preparation of different classes of (per)fluoropolyethers (Fomblin (R), Galden (R), Solvera (R), Fluorolink (R)). The chemistry of these peroxidic compounds has been recently exploited for the synthesis of novel PFPE block copolymers. In the present work we report the synthesis, the structural and physical-chemical characterization of block copolymers obtained by the reaction of peroxidic PFPEs with 2,2,4-trifluoro-5-trifluoromethoxy-1,3-dioxole, a cyclic homopolymerizable perfluoroolefin. These block copolymers combine the most attractive properties of the PFPEs, like the excellent lubrication, the high thermal stability and the optical transparency, with new specific properties which are related to the perfluorodioxolenic blocks. The apparent diffusion constant determined in this experiment depends on the time over which the diffusion measurement is made. The pure copolymer and the nanocomposites based on it are inhomogeneous materials phenomenologically similar to a porous system with the fast diffusion domains having an apparent pore size in the micron size range. In this regard the diffusion can be considered to be anomalous with slopes as low as 0.6 in plots of the logarithm of mean-square displacement vs the logarithm of time at short observation times and at lower silica content. The slower diffusing toluene and cyclohexane are influenced to a greater extent by the inhomogeneous structure when motion is considered over the same time. The addition of nanoparticles increases the diffusion constants of the penetrants substantially, and the diffusion constants from NMR are consistent with diffusion constants determined from desorption experiments. At high nanoparticle concentration, the apparent pore size increases and diffusion becomes closer to Fickian. Rotational motion of cylcohexane is characterized by deuterium spin-lattice relaxation time measurements made as a function of temperature on deuterated cyclohexane in the copolymer/nanoparticle composite. Two minima are present in the spin-lattice relaxation data, indicating the presence of two distinct rotational processes. The two processes are interpreted in terms of the presence of two domains just as in the interpretation of the diffusion data. While an increase in nanoparticle concentration increases the apparent diffusion constants at long times, it does not change rotational motion. The increase in translational mobility is attributed to improved connections between the domains.

Chemical Constituents from the Fungus Antrodia cinnamomea

A great deal of resources has been invested by the semiconductor industry as a whole to make ready 157 nm as the next lithography technology node. It has been previously reported(1-4) that standard 193 nm materials, like Teflon AF(R) and Cytop(R), fail catastrophically upon exposure at 157 nm radiation; and that their transmission is very poor to non-existent. In this paper we report data showing that these materials have higher transmission and lifetimes than previously thought 2. The physical lifetime of Cytop(R) of nearly 500 J/cm(2) is remarkably high, although the transmission varies as a function dose suggesting physical and chemical changes from the onset. For Teflon AF(R) the transmission is a more complex function of exposure dose, suggesting competing mechanisms. From experiments run with PVDF (polyvinyl difluoride), we conclude that the widely reported photodarkening effect is due to the presence of hydrogen in close proximity to a fluorine atom. From IR spectra we conclude that the dioxole moeity in Teflon AF(R) undergoes a series of photochemical reactions that lead to the physical destruction of the polymer.

Pulse field gradient NMR study of diffusion of pentane in amorphous glassy perfluorodioxole

Pulse field gradient diffusion measurements of pentane in a random copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) and 2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4,5-difluoro-1,3-dioxole (PDD) were made as a function of the time allowed for diffusion to occur. The initial change in echo amplitude at low values of q = gamma deltag was used to determine the apparent diffusion constant. The apparent diffusion constant determined in this way decreases to a constant value as time increases. At a time of 12.4 ms the apparent diffusion constant was 2.2 x 10(-7) cm(2) s(-1), and it decreases to 5.87 x 10(-8) cm(2) s(-1) at 1 s. This change in the apparent diffusion constant was interpreted in terms of morphological structure on the micron length scale in this completely amorphous glassy polymer. This polymer has been considered to have high free volume regions which lead to the observed rapid permeation of gases and vapors. These regions are interspersed in lower free volume regions, and the low free volume regions constitute the majority component. In the pulse field gradient NMR experiment, regions allowing for rapid diffusion interspersed with regions allowing only slow diffusion can lead to changes in the apparent diffusion constant as a function of diffusion time. The data observed in this system were compared with two simple models for the topology of the regions allowing for rapid diffusion: restricted diffusion and tortuous diffusion. The observed behavior is qualitatively similar to tortuous diffusion and can be fit with an equation describing this type of diffusion.
