Lanthanide-doped upconverting nanoparticles (UCNP) are being extensively studied for bioapplications due to their unique photoluminescence properties and low toxicity. The architecture of UCNP influenced both the luminescence properties and the energy transfer to the dye: UCNP with an inert shell were the brightest, but their RET efficiency was the lowest (17%). Nanoparticles with Tm3+ only in the shell have revealed the highest RET efficiencies (up to 51%) despite the compromised luminescence due to surface quenching.

Methyl vinyl carbonyl oxide is an important intermediate in the reaction of isoprene and ozone and may be responsible for most of the (OH)-O-center dot formed in isoprene ozonolysis. We use CBS-QB3 calculations and RRKM/ master equation simulations to characterize all the pathways leading to the formation of this species, all the interconversions among its four possible conformers, and all of its irreversible isomerizations. Our calculations, like previous studies, predict (OH)-O-center dot yields consistent with experiment if thermalized syn-methyl carbonyl oxides form (OH)-O-center dot quantitatively. Natural bond order analysis reveals that the vinyl group weakens the C=O bond of the carbonyl oxide, making rotation about this bond accessible to this chemically activated intermediate. The vinyl group also allows one conformer of the carbonyl oxide to undergo electrocyclization to form a dioxole, a species not previously considered in the literature. Dioxole formation, which has a CBS-QB3 reaction barrier of 13.9 kcal/mol, is predicted to be favored over vinyl hydroperoxide formation, dioxirane formation, and collisional stabilization. Our calculations also predict that two dioxole derivatives, 1.2-epoxy-3-butanone and 3-oxobutanal, should be major products of isoprene ozonolysis.

Effect of amorphous fluorinated coatings on photocatalytic properties of anodized titanium surfaces

The BDMMBSH derivatives were characterized using different spectroscopic techniques, such as H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR, FTIR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy, and their crystal structures were analyzed using the single crystal X-ray diffraction method (SCXRDM). Subsequently, the BDMMBSH compounds were used for the significant detection of the carcinogenic heavy metal ion, lead (Pb2+), via a reliable electrochemical approach. A sensitive and selective Pb2+ sensor was developed via the deposition of a thin layer of BDMMBSH on a GCE with the conducting polymer matrix Nafion (NF). The sensitivity, LOQ, and LOD of the proposed sensor towards Pb2+ were calculated from the calibration curves to be 2220.0 pA mu M-1 cm(-2), 320.0 mM, and 96.0 pM, respectively. The validation of the BDMMBSH/GCE/NF sensor probe was performed via the selective determination of Pb2+ in spiked natural samples with a satisfactory and rational outcome.

In contrast to previous results in hydrocarbon-rich polymers, the solubility of perfluorocarbon penetrants is higher in TFE/BDD87 than that of their hydrocarbon analogues. The solubility of all penetrants in TFE/BDD87 decreases with increasing temperature. Enthalpies of sorption become more negative as penetrant size increases. Fluorocarbon enthalpies of sorption at infinite dilution are significantly more exothermic than those of their hydrocarbon analogues, suggesting more favorable interactions between fluorocarbon penetrants and perfluorinated TFE/BDD87 than between hydrocarbon penetrants and this polymer. Perfluorocarbon permeability coefficients are nearly an order of magnitude lower than those of their hydrocarbon analogues due to the larger size of the fluorocarbons and their subsequently lower diffusivities. The permeability of TFE/BDD87 increases with increasing temperature, indicating that activation energies of permeation (E-p) are positive. E-p values in TFE/BDD87 are smaller than those of conventional glassy polymers. Diffusion coefficients of the lower sorbing gases (O-2, N-2, CO2, CH4, CF4) exhibit a concentration dependence that is consistent with dual-mode transport in unplasticized glassy polymers. For more strongly sorbing C2H6, C3H8, C2F6, and C3F8, diffusion coefficients increase exponentially with increasing penetrant concentration, suggesting plasticization. Activation energies of diffusion in TFE/BDD87 are positive and increase linearly with penetrant diameter squared. Relative to conventional glassy polymers, E-D values in TFE/BDD87 are low. However, E-D is larger than Delta H-S. TFE/BDD87 is easily plasticized by the larger, more soluble penetrants and is susceptible to penetrant-induced conditioning. The level of conditioning is highest for the largest, most soluble penetrant examined (C3F8), and the conditioned state gradually relaxes toward that of the as-cast state.
