Oligospirothioketal (OSTK) rods are presented as an adjustable scaffold for optical membrane probes. The OSTK rods are readily incorporated into lipid bilayers due to their hydrophobic backbones. Eco-sustainable synthesis and biological evaluation of 2-phenyl 1,3-benzodioxole derivatives as anticancer, DNA binding and antibacterial agents

The current research and development scenario in medicinal chemistry demands small molecules synthesized in a simple, fast and effective way with enhanced activity and fewer side effects than the existing ones. Therefore, one-pot, microwave assisted green and efficient synthesis of a series of derivatives belonging to 2-phenyl 1,3-benzodioxole (1a-14a) and 2-phenyl 1,3-benzo-dioxole-4-ol (1b-14b) class were carried out and subsequently investigated for their anticancer, antibacterial and DNA binding potential. Compound 3c proved to be the most active one among the screened derivatives possessing anticancer and antibacterial potency greater than the standard reference compound (cisplatin and cinoxacin for anticancer and antibacterial activity, respectively). The most active compound in terms of DNA binding capacity was found to be 5b. A rewarding feature of the work is a facile, convenient, eco friendly one step synthesis of compounds demonstrating attenuated activity against cancer and bacterial cell with an inherent potential of binding to DNA. Subsequently, a hit molecule for further anticancer, antibacterial (compound 3c) and DNA binding studies (compound 5b) was also identified. (C) 2014 King Saud University. Thermal desorption spectroscopy of PTFE dielectric films deposited on silicon wafers

Fluoropolymers are receiving considerable attention for use as integrated circuit dielectric materials. There is considerable confusion regarding the thermal stability of these materials. It is desirable to discuss thermal stability in terms of the outgassing properties of thin films deposited onto silicon wafers, since this is a key indicator of the fitness for use of a given dielectric film technology. In this paper we discuss the various types of fluoropolymer films and review previously published data on their thermal stability. Two such fluoropolymers, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and 2,2-bistrifluoromethy-1-4,5-difluoro-1,3-dioxole (TFE-PDD), have been previously proposed for use as integrated circuit dielectrics. Thermal Desorption Spectroscopy results for thin films of these two polymers are presented. These results show that PTFE has much lower outgassing than does TFE-PDD.

Quantitatively controllable fluid flows with ballpoint-pen-printed patterns for programmable photo-paper-based microfluidic devices

Regulating the fluid flow in microfluidic devices enables a wide range of assay protocols for analytical applications. A programmable, photo-paper-based microfluidic device fabricated by using a method of cutting and laminating, followed by printing, is reported. The flow distance of fluid in the photo-paper-based channel was linearly proportional to time. By printing silver nanoparticle (AgNP) and poly.4,5-difluoro-2,2-bis.trifluoromethyl)-1,3-dioxole-co-tetrafluoroethylene] (PTFE) patterns on the surface of a photo-paper-based channel, we were able to either increase or decrease the fluid flow in the fabricated microfluidic devices, while maintaining the linearity in the flow distance-time relation. In comparison to the speed of fluid flow in a pristine channel, by using hydrophilic AgNP patterns, we were able to increase the speed in the channel by up to 15 times while we were able to slow the speed by a factor of 3 when using hydrophobic PTFE dots. We then further demonstrated a single-step protocol for detecting glucose and a multi-step protocol for detecting methyl paraoxon (MPO) with our methods in photo-paper-based microfluidic devices. This approach can lead to improved fluid handling techniques to achieve a wide range of complex, but programmable, assays without the need for any additional auxiliary devices for automated operation.

The influence of ochratoxin A on DNA adduct formation by the carcinogen aristolochic acid in rats

Exposure to the plant nephrotoxin and carcinogen aristolochic acid (AA) leads to the development of AA nephropathy, Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) and upper urothelial carcinoma (UUC) in humans. Beside AA, exposure to ochratoxin A (OTA) was linked to BEN. Although OTA was rejected as a factor for BEN/UUC, there is still no information whether the development of AA-induced BEN/UUC is influenced by OTA exposure. Therefore, we studied the influence of OTA on the genotoxicity of AA (AA-DNA adduct formation) in vivo. AA-DNA adducts were formed in liver and kidney of rats treated with AA or AA combined with OTA, but no OTA-related DNA adducts were detectable in rats treated with OTA alone or OTA combined with AA. Compared to rats treated with AA alone, AA-DNA adduct levels were 5.4- and 1.6-fold higher in liver and kidney, respectively, of rats treated with AA combined with OTA. Although AA and OTA induced NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase (NQO1) activating AA to DNA adducts, their combined treatment did not lead to either higher NQO1 enzyme activity or higher AA-DNA adduct levels in ex vivo incubations. Oxidation of AA I (8-methoxy-6-nitrophenanthro[3,4-d]-1,3-dioxole-5-carboxylic acid) to its detoxification metabolite, 8-hydroxyaristolochic acid, was lower in microsomes from rats treated with AA and OTA, and this was paralleled by lower activities of cytochromes P450 1A1/2 and/or 2C11 in these microsomes. Our results indicate that a decrease in AA detoxification after combined exposure to AA and OTA leads to an increase in AA-DNA adduct formation in liver and kidney of rats.
