Metal-catalyzed cyclization reactions of carbonyl ylides: Synthesis and DFT study of mechanisms

1,3-Dioxole derivatives were synthesized from copper(II)-catalyzed cyclization reactions of carbonyl ylides derived from 3-methylenebicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-one and dimethyl diazomalonate. The reaction mechanisms leading to all possible products have been extensively investigated by density functional theory. The generally accepted mechanism proposed by Doyle(12) for the carbene transformation reactions were applied to this system for the first time to shed light on the reaction mechanism and to understand the catalytic activity of Cu(acac)(2). Calculations have shown that the reaction mechanisms leading to different products greatly depend on the conformations of copper-stabilized carbonyl ylides, which are treated as reactants in our calculations. The conformational effects and donor-acceptor type stabilizations between the catalyst and the carbonyl ylide observed in the reactants and the transition state geometries seem to be the main reasons for the observed product selectivity. Our theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental results, and the calculations successfully predict the experimental 75:25 product distribution.

In addition, the isolation of natural substances from root exudates of plants with potential to inhibit broomrape development opens the door to the design of new herbicides based on natural and benign sources. They were characterized as 4-cyanato-2-methoxyphenol, 2-cyanato-benzo[1,3]dioxole, 2-methoxybenzo[1,3]dioxole-5-carbonitrile and benzo[1,3]dioxole-2-carbonitrile by spectroscopic (essentially NMR and HRESI MS spectra) methods. These compounds were investigated for allelopathic activity on Orobanche germination and development. Ryecarbonitriline A induced germination of Orobanche cumana seeds, and this germination can be considered as suicidal because O. cumana does not parasite rye roots and cannot survive without host resources beyond germination stage. In addition, ryecyanatine A promotes a rapid cessation of O. cumana, Orobanche crenata and Orobanche minor radicle growth with the promotion of a layer of papillae at the radicle tip in O. cumana and O. crenata hampering the contact of the parasite to the host. DMo13 calculations were centered on the neutral forms of the molecules tested, since these types of inhibitors are impossible to be protonated in an acidic environment. Quantum chemical descriptors inform that tensioactives are more chemically reactive and the local and global reactivity is concentrated in the heads of these species. Fukui indices were determined to evaluate the nucleophilic and electrophilic centers of the atoms of the molecule. The molecular dynamics (MD) simulation used show that EGC8 and EGC14 inhibitors are located vertically in relation to the surface. The values of E interaction and E binding reflect the spontaneity of the adsorption process.

Organic solvent mixture separation during reverse osmosis and nanofiltration by a perfluorodioxole copolymer membrane

Highly selective separation of one organic solvent from its mixture with another organic solvent by reverse osmosis will be very useful. Using a 1.67 mu m thick film of a particular variety of a glassy amorphous copolymer, perfluoro-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxole copolymerized with tetrafluoroethylene, (PDD-TFE), supported on an e-PTFE support, organic solvent reverse osmosis (OSRO) separations of a number of types of binary organic solvent mixtures were studied. A few studies employed a 0.6 mu m thick film of the same copolymer variety designated CMS-7. The feed pressures were varied between 1000 and 5000 kPa; most of the data involved 2500-3500 kPa. Different types of solvent mixtures were studied (similar classes mentioned together): ethanol-NMP, ethanol-dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO); methanol-DMSO, methanol-NMP; toluene-methanol, toluene-N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), toluene-dimethylformamide (DMF); heptane-dodecane; heptane-ethanol. In quite a few cases, a pure solvent was obtained as permeate; the permeate flux could be as much as 3.5 L/m(2)-hr depending on the feed composition and pressure. Since this behavior is unusual in reverse osmosis, mixture sorption studies were implemented. Mixture sorption data of various mixtures in the copolymer show exclusive sorption by the species showing up as the pure permeate under certain conditions. These and other observed OSRO permeation rate and sorption behavior in the perfluoro-copolymers explain the basis for such extraordinary selectivity for quite a few systems. To illustrate OSRO-facilitated solvent-exchange in organic solvent nanofiltration, studies were carried out also to retain the dye Oil Blue N using the following binary solvent mixtures: toluene-NMP; methanol-NMP. These and other potential applications of highly selective OSRO have been discussed.
