Vanillin 1,2-propylene glycol acetal was synthesized through the condensation of vanillin with 1,2-propylene glycol using silica supported perchloric acid (HClO4/SiO2) as a catalyst. The effects of the molar ratio of reactant, the amount of catalyst, reaction temperature and reaction time on the yield of product were discussed. The results showed that the optimized reaction conditions were as follows: the molar ratio of vanillin (0.1 mol) to 1,2-propylene glycol (0.16 mol) was 1:1.6, the amount of catalyst was 1.5 g, reaction temperature was 80°C, and the reaction time was 45 min. Under the optimum conditions mentioned above, the yield of vanillin 1,2-propylene glycol acetal reached more than 87.1%. HClO4/SiO2 as a heterogeneous catalyst had many advantages of high thermal stability, ease of preparation and reusability.

Factors influencing the yield, such as the molar ratio of starting materials, time, catalyst species and amount, and different water entraining agents, were studied and the better reaction conditions were determined The factors influencing the synthesis were studied and the optimal reaction conditions were found as follows: a molar ratio of cinnamaldehyde/ethylene glycol = 1.0/1.3, a catalyst dosage of 0.3%, a cyclohexane amount of 15 mL and a reaction time of 4.5 h. The selectivity was above 98% and the product yield was 94.58%. The structure of vanillin 1,2-propylene glycol acetal was identified by means of IR and GC.

It is still a challenge to integrate multiple dynamic covalent bonds (DCBs) into one network, so the effects of DCB multiplicity on the performance of covalent adaptable networks (CANs) are still unclear. In this contribution, based on the versatility of vanillin chem., we realized the construction of CANs containing different DCB multiplicities, and thus the influences of DCB multiplicity on the vitrimeric performance of the networks are fairly investigated. It turns out that, with increasing DCB multiplicity, the relaxation time of the networks can be reduced significantly because the dynamic performance of the CANs with double or triple DCBs is determined by not only the activation energy but the synergistic effect of different DCBs. A plausible method was first proposed to quantify the synergistic effect of DCB multiplicity. We envisage that the disclosed findings will provide significant insight into the optimized design of CANs with tunable dynamic performance.

The copolymer was applied in making leather as a tanning agent and the shrinkage temperature (Ts) of tanned leather reached 82.5°C. The average thickness increment ratio (E) of re-tanned leather was 19.4%. It has also excellent assisting dyeing and soft leather fibers properties. The application leather has desired dyeing effect and excellent softness.
