New perfluorinated ionomer with improved oxygen permeability for application in cathode polymeric electrolyte membrane fuel cell

Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEM-FC) are considered an alternative to the internal combustion engine for transportation. Despite the existence of relevant demonstrations and few commercial fleets, there are still a series of issues such as the durability of the materials and the cost of platinum which limit a wider application in this field. To this regard, better utilization and consequently loading reduction of Pt in electrodes is of outstanding importance. Herein we report the synthesis, characterization and application of an ionomer in the cathode catalyst layer; thanks to its higher oxygen permeability the quantity of Pt may be minimized. This ionomer is a modification of commercial Aquivion PFSA obtained by incorporation of a third monomer (2,2,4-trifluoro-5-trifluoromethoxy-1,3-dioxole, MDO). Results on cast membrane demonstrate a 20% higher oxygen permeability of the new ionomer compared to Aquivion PFSA E87-05S and Nafion NR212 at 100% RH. Furthermore, an improvement of the performance of a PEM-FC in automotive conditions (RH = 40-70%) is obtained with the assembly where this ionomer is used as cathode binder. In particular polarization curve at 70% RH shows improvement of 20% of power density peak and electrochemical impedance confirms higher oxygen permeability due to lower mass transport resistance than Aquivion.

Thermodynamics of Sorption in an Amorphous Perfluorinated Copolymer AF1600 Studied by Inverse Gas Chromatography

Detailed investigation of infinite dilution sorption of organic vapors (C-7-C-16 n-alkanes, toluene, octafluorotoluene, p-fluorotoluene, 2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorotoluene, perfluorooctane) in perfluorinated copolymer AF1600 (random copolymer of 35 mol % perfluoroethylene and 65 mol % 2,2-bis-(trifluoromethyl)-4,5-difluoro-1,3-dioxole) was performed by inverse gas chromatography (IGC). C-13-C-16 n-alkanes were studied in the temperature range including both glassy and rubbery states of the polymer, while sorption of other solutes was investigated only in the glassy state of the perfluorinated copolymer. Retention diagrams of C-13-C-16 n-alkanes showed breakpoints at similar to 150 degrees C which corresponds to T-g of A F1600. Thermodynamic analysis of IGC data in rubbery and glassy states was performed based on the model developed earlier which included evaluation of Flory-Huggins interaction parameter chi and glassy state structual parameters: excess free volume phi(0)(v) polymer cohesion energy epsilon(22), and entropy depression term s(12). It was shown that aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons were poor solvents for glassy A F1600. Positive chi values substantially increased when the length of the alkane increases. Fluorinated hydrocarbons were, however, good solvents for AF1600, and their quality improved with the increase in fluorination degree. On the basis of the cohesion energy of AF1600 (-17.76 kJ/mol) evaluated by CAChe 7.5 molecular modeling package, excess free volume of AF1600 in the glassy state was found to be close to 0.12 and slightly dependent on temperature. The entropy effect of sorption in glassy polymer was highly negative with entropy depression proportional to molar volume of solute.

A new polyphenol modified electrode containing an anchored ruthenium complex and its use in electrocatalytic oxidation of organic substrates

This work describes the preparation of a new modified electrode containing a ruthenium complex (cis-aquadimethylbipyridyltriphenylphosphineruthenium II), bonded to a stable polyphenol film. This modified electrode promotes the fast electrocatalytic oxidation of safrol (5-allyl-benzo[1,3]dioxole) and isosafrol (5-propenyl-benzo[1,3]dioxole), giving two interesting products benzo[1,3]dioxole-5-carbaldehyde (piperonal) and 3-benzo[1,3]dioxol-5-yl-propenal respectively, with good yields. The electrode preparation can be carried out at a potential range which does not interfere on the anchored electroactive ruthenium complex, but it allows for the phenol oxidation to occur and therefore polymerize forming the polyphenol film. Potential Antileptospiral Constituents from Phyllanthus amarus

Background: Phyllanthus amarus (PA) is a well-known herb for its medicinal properties and widely used worldwide. PA has a significant role in Indian Ayurveda system of medicine for treating various ailments such as gonorrhea, menorrhagia, and other genital infections. Objectives: The aim of the study is to investigate antileptospiral activity and isolate the potential antileptospiral constituents of the methanol extract of PA (MPA). Materials and Methods: The primary pharmacological tests for leptospirosis were investigated by test tube dilution technique and microdilution technique. To examine the morphogenesis of experimental leptospirosis by morphologic and histological methods, albino mice were inoculated intraperitoneally with Leptospira interrogans sero group Icterohaemorrhagiae strains. Results: The activity-guided repeated fractionation for MPA through silica gel column chromatography yielded three compounds that exhibited antioxidant and in vitro, in vivo, and in silico antileptospiral activities. Based on diverse physicochemical and spectroscopic analyses (viz., 13C NMR,1H NMR, ultraviolet [UV], IR, and mass spectroscopy), the potential constituents were elucidated as 5-(3-(3,4-dimethoxybenzyl)-4-methoxy-2-(methoxymethyl)butyl)4,7- dimethoxybenzo[d][ 1,3] dioxole(C1), 1-(3-( 3,4- dimethoxybenzyl)- 4-methoxy- 2-(methoxymethyl) butyl)- 2,3,4,5tetramethoxybenzene(C2), and 4-(3-(3,4dimethoxybenzyl)-4-methoxy-2-(methoxymethyl)butyl)-3,6-dimethoxybenzene-1,2-diol (C3). The histopathological examinations of both kidney and liver showed promising activity with C3 at 75 and 100 mu g/mL, respectively. Conclusion: The in vitro, in vivo, and in silico studies revealed that benzo methoxy class of compounds has great potential as antileptospiral agents.

A new larvicidal lignan from Piper fimbriulatum

A new lignan, 3,4,5′-trimethoxy-3,4′-methylenedioxy-7,9′:7′,9 diepoxylignan (1) (6-[4-(3,4-dimethoxy-phenyl)tetrahydro-furo[3,4-c]furan-1-yl]-4-methoxy-benzo[1,3] dioxole) together with two known lignans, 7′-epi-sesartemin (2) and diayangambin (3), and a known flavonoid, 5-hydroxy-7,4′-dimethoxyflavone (4), were isolated from the leaves of Piper fimbriulatum C. DC. Synthesis, Docking and Anticancer Evaluation of New Pyridine-3-Carbonitrile Derivatives

N’-(2-((4-(Benzo[d][1, 3]dioxol-5-yl)-3-cyano-6-(naphthalen-2-yl)-pyridin-2-yl)oxy)- acetyl)benzohydrazide (6) and hydrazide derivatives (7-10) were synthesized via reaction of 3-cyano-pyridinacetohydrazide (5) with benzoylchloride and the appropriate aldehyde, respectively. Also, 4-(Benzo[d][1, 3]dioxol-5-yl)-2-(2-(3-methyl-5-oxo-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-2-oxoethoxy)-6-(naphthalen-2-yl) nicotinonitrile (11) was prepared through reaction of (5) with ethylacetoacetate. In addition, the hydrazide 5 was used as a starting material for synthesizing other nicotinonitrile derivatives (12, 13) and acetohydrazides (14, 15). Moreover, new 2, 5-disubsitituted-1,3,4-oxadiazoles (16, 17) were furnished by the reaction of (5) with benzoic acid derivatives. The cytotoxicity for some new compounds was investigated against human breast cancer MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cell lines at concentrations (0, 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 mu g/ml) using MTT assay. Compounds (4, 9, 14 and 17) were recorded the lowest half-maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50s) against MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cell lines via cytotoxicity assays. These results were confirmed using molecular docking experiments. From the previous observations, we suggested that our synthesized compounds could be of great potential against breast cancer cells.

Oxepine and bibenzyl compounds from Bulbophyllum kwangtungense

Phytohemical investigation of the EtOAc extract of leaves and stems of Bulbophyllum kwangtungense Schlecht., belonging to the orchid family was carried out. In addition, anti-tumor activities of the new compounds were also evaluated. Among the compounds isolated, compound 2 showed anti-tumor activities with IC50 value of 47.2 mu g/mL in vitro against cultures of Hela cells.
