Vanillin 1,2-propylene glycol acetal was synthesized using 1,2-propylene glycol and vanillin as starting materials and strongly acidic cation exchange resin as catalyst. The effect of reaction temperature, reaction time, materials ratio, and the amounts of catalyst on the synthesis was studied, and the proper technol. conditions were given as follows: vanillin was 0.1mol, n(1,2-propanediol):n(vanillin) was 2.2; reaction temperature was 90-95°C, reaction time was 3.5 h, the amount of strongly acidic cation exchange resin was 1 g; and the water-carrying agent (cyclohexane) was 30 mL. The yield of vanillin 1,2-propylene glycol acetal can reach 84.86%. Purity of the vanillin 1,2-propylene glycol acetal is 98.5% and the catalysts can be used repeatedly.
