Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with phosphine based ligands are extremely attractive for catalysis. Phosphine was successfully incorporated for the first time into three-dimensional (3D) MOFs. The MOFs are based on rigid L2M2 dimeric secondary building blocks assembled from Cu(I) and a pyridyl diphosphine ligand, 4-(3,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)phenyl)pyridine, with Br (CuL-Br), Cl (CuL-Br), or PF6 (CuL-PF6) as counteranions [L = 4-(3,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)phenyl)pyridine]. The structures have a 4.122 net topol., which can be further simplified to 64.82-qtz. The MOFs contain 1D homochiral channels. The PF6 anions hosted in the 1D channel of CuL-PF6 can be readily exchanged with Br or Cl while keeping the framework intact. The materials show anion-tunable flexible porosity. CuL-Br reveals gradual uptake of MeOH, while CuL-PF6 exhibits stepwise sorption for MeOH. The heterogeneous Lewis acid catalytic activity of the MOFs was shown in ketalization reaction. CuL-Br and CuL-PF6 are active in the reactions between ethylene glycol and 2-butanone/cyclohexanone, up to 93% yield with 0.2 mol % catalyst loading. In contrast, no reaction happens between ethylene glycol and bulky benzophenone, suggesting profound size selectivity. The catalysts can be reused with the framework left intact for three runs without loss of activity.

Several impregnated metal ions (Fe (III), Co (II), Ni (II), and Ru (IV)) and a raw iron ore (natural limonite) were examined as catalysts for gasification of pine sawdust in air/CO2 at 700 and 800°. The yields of char and tar both increased with increasing CO2 content in the feed gas. All the impregnated metal ions, in particular Ni (II), Co (II) and Ru (IV), were very effective for promoting biomass gasification in CO2, leading to greatly reduced yields of tar and char accompanied by significantly enhanced formation of CO and H2. At 800°, the impregnation of Fe (III), Ni (II), Co (II) or Ru (IV) led to almost complete conversion of the solid biomass into gas/liquid products, producing an extremely low char yield ( < 1-4%), and a very high yield of combustible gas (from 51.7% for Fe to 84% for Ru). The tar yield reduced from 32.1% without catalyst to 19-27% with the impregnated metal ions.

Reaction of cyclic acetals with BCl3 gave α-chloro ethers which on in situ LiAlH4 reduction gave hydroxy ethers in 49-99% yield. E.g., treatment of 2-propyl-1,3-dioxolane with BCl3 (CH2Cl2, ∼0°, 0.2 h) followed by LiAlH4 (Et2O, 30 min) gave >95% HO(CH2)2OBu. The rate determining step in this reaction is the formation of an intermediate oxocarbenium ion. BBr3 was a more, and BHCl2 a less, powerful reagent than BCl3 for this reaction.

In automotive industry, plastic consumption has substantially increased due to its affordability, durability, and lightness. However, the massive generation of plastic wastes from the automotive industry becomes a growing environmental concern. Current disposal methods of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) are incineration and landfilling, but these methods generate toxic chems. and leachate into the environment. To propose more sustainable disposal platform for ELVs, this study used a pyrolysis process using CO2 as a reaction medium. As a case study, automotive seat form (ASF) in ELVs was disposed and valorized through the CO2-assisted pyrolysis. ASF, composed of polyurethane, generated harmful aromatic compounds during pyrolysis process such as benzene, aniline and their derivatives To convert harmful chems. into value-added syngas (H2 and CO), catalytic pyrolysis of ASF was performed using a nickel catalyst. Effects of both CO2 and nickel catalyst showed 89.9 wt% reduction of toxic chem. production by converting them into syngas, as comparing to pyrolysis without Ni catalyst. Gas-phase-reaction between CO2 and pyrogenic products from ASF resulted in more than 200 times of CO production Also, CO2 suppressed catalyst deactivation. Therefore, this study suggested that CO2 and plastic waste from ELVs can be converted to value-added products through CO2-assisted catalytic pyrolysis.

Mushrooms can break down complex plant materials into smaller, more digestible and bioactive compounds The present study investigated the antiasthma effect of an Ulmus parvifolia bark extract bioprocessed in Lentinus edodes liquid mycelium culture (BPUBE) against allergic asthma in chicken egg ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized/challenged mice. BPUBE suppressed total IgE release from U266B1 cells in a dose-dependent manner without cytotoxicity. Inhibitory activity of BPUBE against OVA-specific IgE secretion in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was observed in OVA-sensitized/challenged asthmatic mice. BPUBE also inhibited OVA-specific IgG and IgG1 secretion into serum from the allergic mice, suggesting the restoration of a Th2-biased immune reaction to a Th1/Th2-balanced status, as indicated by the Th1/Th2 as well as regulatory T cell (Treg) cytokine profile changes caused by BPUBE in serum or BALF. Inflammatory cell counts in BALF and lung histol. showed that leukocytosis and eosinophilia induced by OVA-sensitization/challenge were inhibited by the oral administration of BPUBE. Amelioration of eosinophil infiltration near the trachea was associated with reduced eotaxin and vascular cell adhesion mol.-1 (VCAM-1) levels. Changes in proinflammatory mediator levels in BALF suggest that BPUBE decreased OVA-sensitization-induced elevation of leukotriene C4 (LTC4) and prostaglandin D2 (PGD2). The finding that asthma-associated biomarker levels of OVA-sensitized/challenged mice were much more inhibited with BPUBE treatment than NPUBE (not-bioprocessed Ulmus parvifolia extract) treatment suggested the production of new bioactive compounds by the mushroom mycelia that may be involved in enhancing the observed antiasthmatic properties. The possible relation of the composition determined by proximate anal. and GC/MS to observed bioactivity is discussed. The results suggest that the elm tree (Ulmus parvifolia) bark bioprocessed with mycelia of shiitake (Lentinus edodes) mushrooms has the potential to prevent and/or treat allergic asthma.

Catalysts with C2-sym. ligands such as Xyl-P-Phos, Cl-MeO-BIPHEP, SYNPHOS, and DifluorPhos are highly effective for this type of reaction. Most of the catalysts tested can be retained in DMPEG (Mn = 500), and the asym. hydrogenation of various quinoline substrates can be carried out in DMPEG/hexane biphasic system with up to 92% ee. The catalysts and the products can be separated via simple phase separation, and the reactivity/stereoselectivity of the catalysts can be retained for at least three reaction cycles.

A review. The enantioselective 1,4-addition of organometallic reagents to electron-deficient alkenes is one of the most important methods for carbon-carbon bond formation. Within this field, the rhodium-catalyzed 1,4-addition of organoboron reagents to electron-deficient alkenes occupies a prominent position owing to (1) the availability, stability, and functional group tolerance of organoboron reagents, (2) the wide range of acceptors that may be employed, (3) the ability of a broad range of structurally distinct families of chiral ligands to induce high enantioselectivities in the reactions, and (4) the usually mild and exptl. convenient conditions, which generally do not require any special precautions to exclude air or moisture.
