Comparison of hydrogen sulfide transport properties in fluorinated and nonfluorinated polymers

Permeability coefficients of hydrogen sulfide in fluorinated polymers are anomalously low when compared to its permeability in nonfluorinated polymers. As a result, fluoropolymer membranes have unusual selectivities for gas pairs involving H2S. For example, while the mixture CO2/H2S selectivity is 0.66 for nonfluorinated, rubbery poly( dimethylsiloxane), this selectivity is 8.0 for a fluoroelastomer composed of tetrafluoroethylene, perfluoromethyl vinyl ether, and perfluoro-8-cyano-5-methyl-3,6-dioxa-1-octene (TFE/PMVE/ 8CNVE) and 27 for a glassy, cyclic perfluoroether (Cytop) under similar test conditions. The low H2S permeability in fluoropolymers is caused primarily by unexpectedly low H2S solubility in the fluorinated polymer matrices. For instance, H2S solubility in a Teflon AF copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and 2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4,5difluoro- 1,3-dioxole is approximately 5 times lower than the value predicted by a correlation of solubility with gas critical temperature. This low solubility is not related to penetrant size or condensability effects but rather is caused by unfavorable molecular interactions between H2S and fluoropolymers. As a result of this unusual solubility behavior, fluorinated glassy polymers are more resistant to H2S-induced plasticization than nonfluorinated glasses. These findings may prove useful in emerging membrane applications that involve H2S, such as natural gas treatment.

Synthesis and polymerization of a novel perfluorinated monomer

Perfluoro(5-methylene-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane) (1) was synthesized by utilizing a direct fluorination reaction. Compound 1 was an entirely novel monomer with difluoromethylene at position 5 on the dioxolane ring as an unprecedented polymerization site. It successfully polymerized with tetrafluoroethylene to afford copolymers, which had T-g values in the range of 60-90 degrees C. The content of monomer 1 in the obtained polymers was less than 20 mol%, which seemed insufficient for giving various unique properties to polymers. However, each polymer was expected to be a superior material because of their advanced thermal stability. Hybrid furoxanyl N-acylhydrazone derivatives as hits for the development of neglected diseases drug candidates

Neglected diseases represent a major health problem. It is estimated that one third of the world population is infected with tuberculosis and additionally Leishmaniosis and Chagas disease affect approximately 30 million people. N-Acylhydrazone moiety is a repeated functional group present in several prototypes and drug candidates for these neglected diseases. On the other hand, furoxan system has been studied as pharmacophore for Leishmaniosis and Chagas diseases. Here we report on the design and preparation of forty hybrid furoxanyl N-acylhydrazones and on their activity on Mycobacterium tuberculosis, H37Rv and MDR strains, Trypanosoma cruzi, and Leishmania amazonensis. Among them, four derivatives displayed excellent to good selectivity indexes against the three different microorganisms. Hybrid compound N’-(4-phenyl-3-furoxanylmethylidene)isoniazide 9 showed the best antibacterial profile with MIC value 4.5 lesser than the value for the reference isoniazid against MDR strain. Furoxanyl N-acylhydrazone (E)-2-methyl-N’-(4-phenyl-3-furoxanylmethylidene)-4H-imidazo[1,2-a] pyridine-3-carbohydrazide 15 was ten-fold more potent against T cruzi Amastigotes than the standard drug nifurtimox. On the other hand, derivatives (E)-N’-(5-benzofuroxanylmethylidene)benzo[d][1,3] dioxole-5-carbohydrazide 25 and (E)-N’-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylmethylidene)-3-methylfuroxan-4-carbohydrazide 37 emerged as leads for the development of new leishmanicidal agents. Synthesis and cytotoxicity studies of new dimethylamino-functionalised and aryl-substituted titanocene anti-cancer agents

From the carbolithiation of 6-N,N-dimethylamino fulvene (3a) and different lithiated aryl species [p-N,N-dimethylanilinyl lithium, p-anisyl lithium and 4-lithio-benzo[1.3]dioxole (2a-c)], the corresponding lithium cyclopentadienide intermediates 4a-c were formed. Electrochemical Behavior and Antioxidant Activity of Hibalactone

Hydrocotyle umbellata L. is a groundcover plant that has been used in the folk medicine of Argentina, Brazil, Cuba e India, mainly to reduce inflammatory processes. The lignan, hibalactone, can be isolated from the roots of the plant. In the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of such natural products, it is believed that the mechanism of action involves the butyrolactone ring, which would act as free pharmacophore. In this study, electrochemical, spectrometric and computational chemistry approaches were used to evaluate the lignan antioxidant activity and electro-oxidation pathway. Electrochemical measurements were performed in a 3 mL cell, operated in a three electrode system, consisting in an Ag/AgCl reference electrode, platinum as counter electrode and glassy carbon electrode was used as working electrode. Radical scavenging assays were performed with DPPH and ABTS. In the computational chemistry approach geometry, optimization was performed with semi empirical calculations (PM3) and the orbitals/charges calculations were performed by the extended Huckel method. The voltammetry showed a very slight variation with pH alteration, which can be justified by lactone hydrolysis that occurs in acidic and basic pH. In the HOMO and total charge density distribution it was possible to observe that the higher prevalence was in the benzo[1,3]dioxole rings and in the alkenes/alkanes in proximity with the lactone ring. The hibalactone displayed a single quasi-reversible electro-oxidation. Given the HOMO and charge density distribution in the lignan, more so the single oxidation in the evaluated potential, it is reasonable to infer that the alkene bonded with the lactone ring was a probable site of oxidation.

Experimental and computational thermochemistry of 1,3-benzodioxole derivatives

The standard (p degrees = 0.1 MPa) molar energies of combustion in oxygen, at T = 298.15 K, of four 1,3-benzodioxole derivatives (5-oxoethyl-1,3-benzodioxole, 5-cyano-1,3-benzodioxole, 5-nitro-1,3-benzodioxole, and 5-methyl-1,3-benzodioxole) were measured by static bomb calorimetry. The standard molar enthalpies of vaporization or of sublimation, at T = 298.15 K, were measured by Calvet microcalorimetry. Combining these results, the standard molar enthalpies of formation of the compounds in the gas phase, at T = 298.15 K, have been calculated: 5-oxoethyl-1,3-benzodioxole (-319.3 +/- 2.8) kJ.mol(-1); 5-cyano-1,3-benzodioxole (-23.2 +/- 2.2) kJ.mol(-1); 5-nitro-1,3-benzodioxole (-176.0 +/- 3.2) kJ.mol(-1) and 5-methyl-1,3-benzodioxole (-184.7 +/- 3.5) kJ.mol(-1). The most stable geometries of all the compounds were obtained using the density functional theory with the B3LYP functional and two basis sets: 6-31G** and 6-311G**. The nonplanarity of the molecules was analyzed in terms of the anomeric effect, which is believed to arise from the interaction between a nonbonded oxygen p(pi) orbital and the empty orbital sigma*(CO) involving the other oxygen atom. Calculations were performed to obtain estimates of the enthalpies of formation of all the substituted benzodioxoles using appropriate isodesmic reactions. There is good agreement between theoretical and experimental results. This agreement allows us to estimate the enthalpies of formation of some 1,3-benzodioxole derivatives whose experimental study was impossible.
