Reverse osmosis separation of particular organic solvent mixtures by a perfluorodioxole copolymer membrane

Reverse osmosis (RO) separation of organic solvent mixtures where solvent molecular weights are < 100 Da is challenging especially for powerful solvents that swell most uncrosslinked polymers. To avoid polymer swelling by solvents, a particular perfluoropolymer, perfluoro-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxole copolymerized with tetrafluoroethylene, (PDD-TFE), designated CMS-7, was studied. This amorphous glassy extremely hydrophobic copolymer has a very high free volume (FV) fraction. The maximum dimension of FV regions is less than similar to 0.65 nm allowing only single solvent molecule permeation. Further, interactions between polarity, dimensions and shapes of solvent molecules with those of polymer FV elements can lead to extraordinarily selective permeation. RO separation of the following binary systems through a thin 1.67 mu m film of this polymer supported on an e-PTFE support was studied over 1000-3500 kPa feed pressure: N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP)-toluene; dimethylformamide (DMF)-toluene; dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO)-toluene; NMP-methanol; n-butanol-ethanol. Pure toluene appeared as permeate for three polar aprotic-aromatic systems from highly toluene-rich feeds; the membrane rejected polar molecules having dimensions similar to those of toluene. High osmotic pressure of the feed mixtures employed vis-a-vis feed pressures used reduced toluene permeation flux and the range of separable feed mixtures. Pure methanol permeate was obtained from particular polar aprotic-polar protic NMP-methanol mixtures due to significantly smaller methanol dimensions. Pure ethanol permeate was also similarly obtained from a particular mixture with n-butanol, a case of polar protic1-polar protic2 system where ethanol molecules were smaller. Permeation behaviors of other solvent mixtures, toluene-n-heptane, NMP-tetrahydrofuran, methanol-water, ethanol-water as well as individual phases of the immiscible mixture of NMP and the nonpolar solvent n-heptane were also studied. Ungeremine and Its Hemisynthesized Analogues as Bactericides against Flavobacterium columnare

The Gram-negative bacterium Flavobacterium columnare is the cause of columnaris disease, which can occur in channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). In a previous study, the betaine-type alkaloid ungeremine, 1, obtained from Pancratium maritimum L. was found to have strong antibacterial activity against F. columnare. In this study, analogues of 1 were evaluated using a rapid bioassay for activity against F. columnare to determine if the analogues might provide greater antibacterial activity and to determine structure-activity relationships of the test compounds. Several ungeremine analogues were prepared by hydrochlorination of the alkaloid and by selenium dioxide oxidation of both lycorine, 7, and pseudolycorine, 8, which yielded the isomer of ungeremine, 3, and zefbetaine, 4, respectively. The treatment of lycorine with phosphorus oxychloride allowed the synthesis of an anhydrolycorine lactam, 5, showing, with respect to 1, the deoxygenation and oxygenation of C-2 and C-7 of the C and B rings, respectively. The results of the structure-activity relationship studies showed that the aromatization of the C ring and the oxidation to an azomethine group of C-7 of the B ring are structural features important for antibacterial activity. In addition, the position of the oxygenation of the C ring as well as the presence of the 1,3-dioxole ring joined to the A ring of the pyrrolo[de]phenanthridine skeleton also plays a significant role in imparting antibacterial activity. On the basis of 24-h 50% inhibition concentration (IC50) results, ungeremine hydrochloride, 2, was similar in toxicity to 1, whereas 5 had the lowest activity. Analogue 2 is soluble in water, which may provide the benefit for use as an effective feed additive or therapeutant compared to ungeremine.

Black pepper (Piper nigrum) contains a variety of alkamides. Among them, piperine has been reported to have antidepressant-like effects in chronically stressed mice, but little is known about the biological activity of other alkamides. In this study, we investigated the effects of alkamides from white pepper (P. nigrum) on neuronal cells. Twelve alkamides were isolated from white pepper MeOH extracts, and their chemical structures were identified by NMR and MS analyses. The compounds were subjected to assays using the luciferase-reporter gene under the control of the BDNF promoter or cAMP response element in mouse neuroblastoma Neuro-2a cells. In both assays, marked reporter-inducing activity was observed for piperine (1), piperettine (2) and piperylin (7), all of which have in common an (E)-5-(buta-1,3-dien-1-yl)benzo[d] [1, 3] dioxole moiety. Piperettine (2) and piperylin (7) tended to increase endogenous BDNF protein levels. Furthermore, piperylin (7) promoted retinoic acid-induced neurite outgrowth. These results suggest that piperylin (7), or analogues thereof, may have a beneficial effect on disorders associated with dysregulation of BDNF expression, such as depression.

Gas Permeation and Hemocompatibility of Novel Perfluorinated Polymers for Blood Oxygenation

Gas permeation properties of three highly permeable perfluorinated polymers (polyhexafluoropropylene (PHFP), amorphous Teflon AF2400, and polyperfluoro(2-methyl-2-ethyl-dioxole-1,3) (PPFMED)), which are promising materials for the dense thin layer of hollow fiber membranes for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation have been studied using nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. Hemocompatibility of the polymeric films has also been investigated on whole blood from healthy donors. Gas permeation of the polymers increases in the order PHFP < PPFMEDD < AF2400, with PHFP alone having the permeability coefficients of the gases do not below those of polydimethylsiloxane applied as the selective layer of blood oxygenation membranes. Hemocompatibility of the polymers declines in the order PHFP > PPFMED > AF2400, with the most permeable polymer AF2400 exhibiting the worst hemocompatibility among the other polymers studied. Polyperfluoro(2-methyl-2-ethyl-dioxole-1,3) is shown to be the most appropriate polymer to fabricate hollow fiber membranes for blood oxygenation.

Ultraclean Graphene Transfer Using a Sacrificial Fluoropolymer Nanolayer: Implications for Sensor and Electronic Applications

The transfer of chemical vapor deposited (CVD) monolayer graphene by using poly[4,5-difluoro-2,2-bis-(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-dioxole-co-tetrafluoroethylene] (Teflon AF1600) fluoropolymer (FP) as a sacrificial nanolayer is demonstrated. Owing to the chemical inertness of FPs, the AF1600-assisted transfer produces an ultraclean surface with excellent transfer integrity. Compared with the widely used poly(methyl methacrylate)-assisted transfer, AF1600-assisted transfer produces better overall transfer quality as measured by root-mean-square (RMS) roughness. Adding a noncovalent surface monolayer between the graphene and the FP facilitates the FP removal after graphene transfer, resulting in a surface with RMS roughness of 0.4-0.5 nm due to a better reduction of the surface residue after transfer. The remaining residue is found to be primarily associated with thermal-expansion ripples in the graphene that act as trapping sites for the low-molecular-weight FP particles. This work provides a scalable solution to clean CVD graphene transfer for many applications, particularly in sensors where surface cleanliness is paramount. The use of prefunctionalized graphene via self-assembled monolayers as molecular scale passivation layer could further enhance its utility as an integration scheme for graphene sensors.

This enables us to verify the accuracy of various WKB formulas suggested in the literature: 1. ordinary WKB, i.e., the formula from the Landau and Lifshitz textbook; 2. Garg’s formula; 3. instanton approach. We show that for the former case all three variants of WKB provide good accuracy while for the latter one they are very inaccurate. The results obtained provide a new theoretical tool for describing relevant experimental data on IR spectroscopy of ring-puckering vibrations.
