Nanocomposite membranes based on nano-sized SiO2 particles with chemical coupling to the polymer matrix are described with special emphasis on gas permeation properties. In this paper, poly(ether imide) with reactive imide rings in the backbone was used as the matrix to which the SiO2 particles were chemically bonded via an amine-containing silane coupling agent. Four types of nanocomposite membranes were prepared by solution casting and melt processing and characterized in terms of morphology and void volume formed due to adding SiO2 particles. The relative gas permeability of the nanocomposite with chemical coupling to matrix was decreased by the presence of SiO2 particles. Diffusion coefficients computed from time lag data also decreased with SiO2 content. However, solubility coefficients computed by dividing the experimental permeability by the diffusivity obtained from the observed time lag increased with SiO2 content contrary to simple composite theory. These permeation properties are discussed in terms of the void volume fraction estimated by density observations. Design and Synthesis of 5-Substituted Benzo[d][1,3]dioxole Derivatives as Potent Anticonvulsant Agents

A series of 5- substituted benzo[d][1,3] dioxole derivatives was designed, synthesized, and tested for anticonvulsant activity using the maximal electroshock (MES) and subcutaneous pentylenetetrazole (scPTZ) screens. Neurotoxicity was determined by rotarod test. In the preliminary screening, six compounds, 3a, 3c, 3d, and 4d- f, showed promising anticonvulsant activities in the MES model, and compounds 4c and 4d exhibited full protection against seizures at doses of 300 mg/kg in the scPTZ model. Among the synthesized compounds, 3c as the most active compound showed high protection against the MES- induced seizures with an ED50 value of 9.8 mg/kg and a TD50 value of 229.4 mg/kg after intraperitoneal injection into mice, thus providing compound 3c with a high protective index (TD50/ED50) of 23.4 comparable to those of reference antiepileptic drugs.

PROCESSABLE FLUORINATED ACRYLIC RESINS WITH LOW DIELECTRIC-CONSTANTS

The preparation of a new class of processable heavily fluorinated acrylic resins with very low dielectric constants is described. The title compounds 2 and 5 were prepared through the condensation of the respective alcohols 1 and 4 with acryloyl chloride. Unlike tetrafluoroethylene, monomers 2 and 5 are easy to process into polymers under normal conditions due to their liquid or semisolid nature. Radical polymerization of the title compounds with a trace amount of azobisisobutyronitrile or methyl ethyl ketone peroxide at 85-100 degrees C leads to homopolymers 3 and 6 and copolymer 7. All polymers exhibit dielectric constants around 2.10-2.24 over a frequency region of 500 MHz to 18.5 GHz; the variation of dielectric constant values over the measured frequency region is within 0.03 for each polymer. These values are very close to the minimum known dielectric constants of 2.0-2.08 for poly(tetrafluoroethylene) and 1.89-1.93 for a terpolymer of 2,2-bis-(trifluoromethyl)-4,5-difluoro-1,3-dioxole 8, perfluoropropylene and tetrafluoroethylene 9. The dielectric constants for poly(tetrafluoroethylene) measured with the same method are observed to be around 1.96-1.99 in order to validate the accuracy of our measurement

Preparation of Hyflon AD60/PVDF composite hollow fiber membranes for vacuum membrane distillation

Hydrophobic membrane is desired to avoid pore wetting phenomenon in membrane distillation (MD). In the present paper, highly hydrophobic Hyflon AD60/PVDF composite hollow fiber membranes were prepared by coating a copolymer (Hyflon AD60) of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) and 2,2,4-trifluoro-5-trifluoro methoxy-1,3-dioxole (TTD) on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes. The effects of Hyflon AD60 concentration, coating time, heat-treatment temperature and heat-treatment time on the structures and performances of Hyflon AD60/PVDF composite hollow fiber membranes in vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) process were investigated. The results show that the hydrophobicity of PVDF hollow fiber membrane was significantly improved by coating Hyflon AD60. The optimized Hyflon AD60 concentration, coating time, heat-treatment temperature and heat-treatment time were 0.1 wt%, 10-20 min, 40-50 degrees C and 9 h, respectively. Employing NaCl solution with concentration of 35 g x L-1, under a vacuum of 0.09 MPa and feed temperature of 70 degrees C, the water flux and salt rejection of the composite hollow fiber membrane in VMD process reached to approximately 10 kg x m(-2) x h(-1) and higher than 99.9 %, respectively, and kept stable, indicating that Hyflon AD60/PVDF composite membrane is an excellent candidate for operation in VMD operation.
