Block copolymer compatibilized polymer: fullerene blend morphology and properties

Recent studies have shown the role of block copolymer as compatibilizer in tuning the phase separated morphology of the active layer so as to improve the overall photovoltaic efficiency of organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices. Here, we substantiate this observation by investigating the role of a rod-coil block copolymer poly-(3-hexylthiophene)-b-polystyrene (P3HT-b-PS) as compatibilizer in influencing the blend morphology and device performance of several polymer:fullerene blend systems. Fullerene derivatives N-(3-methoxypropyl)-2-(carboxyethyl)-5-(4-cyanophenyl) fulleropyrrolidine (NCPF) and N-(3-methoxypropyl)-2-(carboxyethyl)-5-(5, 5-difluorobenzo-dioxole) fulleropyrrolidine (FFNCPF) were synthesized using Prato reaction, while P3HT-b-PS copolymer was synthesized using the combination of Grignard metathesis, ATRP, and click chemistry. The addition of P3HT-b-PS in P3HT:PCBM blend led to the formation of more homogenous structure compared to the pure P3HT:PCBM blend. Also, a reduction in domain size was observed in P3HT: FFNCPF system upon P3HT-b-PS addition which can be attributed to the compatibilization effect of BCP. Incorporation of P3HT-b-PS block copolymer was found to effectively alter the thin film nanostructure of polymer/fullerene derivative blends and polymer crystalline structure. Maximum enhancement in power conversion efficiency (PCE) of compatabilized P3HT:PCBM blend system was noticed followed by P3HT:FFNCPF and P3HT:NCPF. The moderate improvement in photovoltaic properties can be correlated with face-on orientation of P3HT crystallites and the segregation of the fullerene domains at the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) cathode interface which facilitates the efficient charge collection as respective electrodes. Anti-fingerprints fluorinated coating for anodized titanium avoiding color alteration

In this study amorphous fluorinated coatings applied to anodized titanium surface have been investigated. A copolymer between tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoro-4-trifluoromethoxy-1,3-dioxole (AD60) and two perfluoropolyether containing ammonium phosphate (F10) or triethoxysilane (S10) functionalities have been tested. To estimate the color alteration of the anodized titanium surfaces due to the application of the coatings, spectrophotometric analyses have been made. Water and n-dodecane contact angles as well as apparent surface energy have been evaluated. Ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy data have been used to measure the thickness of the fluorinated coatings. A tailored mechanical preliminary test has also been explored to evaluate the adhesion of the coatings on the anodized titanium surface. The resistance to surface soiling with castor oil was also preliminarily investigated. The fluorinated coating tested on anodized titanium showed a low apparent surface energy and high chromatic aspect conservation, this is particularly evident for the titanium anodized coated with triethoxysilane functionalities fluoropolymers S10.

Collective Syntheses of Icetexane Natural Products Based on Biogenetic Hypotheses

A divergent synthesis of 10 icetexane natural products based on a proposed biogenetic cationic ring expansion of a reduced carnosic acid derivative is described. Of these icetexanes, (+)-salvicanol, (-)-cyclocoulterone, (-)-coulterone, (-)-obtusinone D, and (-)-obtusinone E have been synthesized for the first time. In addition, the hypothesis for the non-enzymatic biogenesis of benzo[1,3]dioxole natural products has been experimentally investigated. Additional experimental evidence for the abiotic formation of the methylenedioxy unit is provided, as photolysis of the quinone (+)-komaroviquinone resulted in the formation of the [1,3]dioxole-containing natural product (-)-cyclocoulterone and (+)-komarovispirone.

Soc. 1993, 115, 12132) that the unexpected nonplanarity of 1,3-dioxole must be attributed to the anomeric effect. MP4/6-31G**/IMP2/6-31G** calculations and NBO analysis show that delocalization involving the oxygen lone pairs and the C-O antibonding orbital, commonly associated with the anomeric effect, plays a decisive role in explaining the above-mentioned experimental fact. A careful analysis of the dipole-dipole interaction energy indicates that, in the present case, the electrostatic theory does not help to rationalize the experimentally observed puckered-ring conformation of 1,3-dioxole.

Highly efficient cyclization of o-iodobenzoates with aldehydes catalyzed by cobalt bidentate phosphine complexes: A novel entry to chiral phthalides

Methyl 2-iodobenzoates 1a-c undergo cyclization reactions with various aromatic aldehydes 2 a-m (RC6H4CHO: R=H 2a, 4-CH3 2b, 4-tBu 2 c, 4-OMe 2 d, 3-OMe 2 e, 4-Cl 2 f, 4-CF3 2g, 4-CN 2h, 4-Ph 2i; benzo[d][1,3]dioxole-5-carbaldehyde (2j), -napthaldehyde (2k), benzofuran-2-carbaldehyde (21), and isonicotinaldehyde (2m)) in the presence of [CoI2(dppe)] (dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) and Zn powder in dry THF at 75 degrees C for 24 h to give the corresponding phthalide derivatives 3a-m and 3q-t in good to excellent yields. Under similar reaction conditions, less reactive aliphatic aldehydes, heptanal (2n), butyraldehyde (2o), and 2-phenylacetaldehyde (2p) also underwent cyclization reactions with la to provide 3n-p, respectively, in fair to good yields. The catalytic reaction can be further extended to cinnamyl aldehyde (2q) with la to give the corresponding phthalide derivative 3u. This synthetic method is compatible with a variety of functional groups on the aryl ring of 2. The phase behavior was found to depend on the feed composition. A comparison of a fully fluorinated commercially available product with a sample synthesized in carbon dioxide (without post-fluorination procedures) to match the composition and the molecular weight of the commercial sample showed no significant difference using IR spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry, indicating similar microstructures. A simple method to determine the copolymer composition based on infrared spectroscopy was developed.
