The physical lifetime of Cytop(R) of nearly 500 J/cm(2) is remarkably high, although the transmission varies as a function dose suggesting physical and chemical changes from the onset. For Teflon AF(R) the transmission is a more complex function of exposure dose, suggesting competing mechanisms. From experiments run with PVDF (polyvinyl difluoride), we conclude that the widely reported photodarkening effect is due to the presence of hydrogen in close proximity to a fluorine atom. From IR spectra we conclude that the dioxole moeity in Teflon AF(R) undergoes a series of photochemical reactions that lead to the physical destruction of the polymer.

Peroxidic perfluoropolyethers (PFPEs) are industrial intermediates used by Solvay Solexis for the preparation of different classes of (per)fluoropolyethers (Fomblin (R), Galden (R), Solvera (R), Fluorolink (R)). The chemistry of these peroxidic compounds has been recently exploited for the synthesis of novel PFPE block copolymers. In the present work we report the synthesis, the structural and physical-chemical characterization of block copolymers obtained by the reaction of peroxidic PFPEs with 2,2,4-trifluoro-5-trifluoromethoxy-1,3-dioxole, a cyclic homopolymerizable perfluoroolefin. These block copolymers combine the most attractive properties of the PFPEs, like the excellent lubrication, the high thermal stability and the optical transparency, with new specific properties which are related to the perfluorodioxolenic blocks. Plasticization of amorphous perfluoropolymers

Poly(perfluoro-4-vinyloxy-1-butene), which is also known as Cytop, and poly[4,5-difluoro-2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-dioxole]-co-poly(tetrafluoroethylene) copolymers with dioxole monomer contents of 65% or 87% (known as Teflon AF1600 and Teflon AF2400, respectively) were plasticized with four fluorous compounds. While plasticization of all polymers with perfluoroperhydrophenanthrene, perfluoro(1-methyldecalin), a perfluorotetraether with three trifluoromethyl side groups and one hydrogen atom, and a linear perfluorooligoether with an average of 14.3 ether groups per molecule was successful, these four plasticizers affected the 12 blends very differently. A threshold of plasticization beyond which further increases in the plasticizer volume fraction did not further affect the glass transition temperature, T-g was observed for some blends. Also, the limit of miscibility ranged from as low as 20% plasticizer content to complete miscibility at all volume fractions. The blends of Teflon AF2400 or Teflon AF1600 with high contents of the oligoether provided T-g values as low as -114 degrees C, lower than for any other fully miscible blend. The occurrence of two glass transitions in an intermediate range of plasticizer volume ratios for these two types of blends can be explained by distinct local environments rather than macroscopic phase separation, as anticipated by the Lodge-McLeish model. New perfluorinated ionomer with improved oxygen permeability for application in cathode polymeric electrolyte membrane fuel cell

Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEM-FC) are considered an alternative to the internal combustion engine for transportation. Despite the existence of relevant demonstrations and few commercial fleets, there are still a series of issues such as the durability of the materials and the cost of platinum which limit a wider application in this field. To this regard, better utilization and consequently loading reduction of Pt in electrodes is of outstanding importance. Herein we report the synthesis, characterization and application of an ionomer in the cathode catalyst layer; thanks to its higher oxygen permeability the quantity of Pt may be minimized. This ionomer is a modification of commercial Aquivion PFSA obtained by incorporation of a third monomer (2,2,4-trifluoro-5-trifluoromethoxy-1,3-dioxole, MDO). Results on cast membrane demonstrate a 20% higher oxygen permeability of the new ionomer compared to Aquivion PFSA E87-05S and Nafion NR212 at 100% RH. Furthermore, an improvement of the performance of a PEM-FC in automotive conditions (RH = 40-70%) is obtained with the assembly where this ionomer is used as cathode binder. In particular polarization curve at 70% RH shows improvement of 20% of power density peak and electrochemical impedance confirms higher oxygen permeability due to lower mass transport resistance than Aquivion.

Here, the application of the fluorinated polymer [Dupont AF, a copolymer of 4,5-difluoro-2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-dioxole and tetrafluoroethylene] is described in stabilizing phosphonate-derivatized molecular assemblies on oxide electrodes. In the procedure, the polymer was dip-coated onto the surfaces of oxide electrodes with pre-bound, phosphonate-derivatized chromophores and assemblies, including assemblies for water oxidation. The results of the experiments showed a high degree of stabilization by the added polymer and a demonstration of its use in stabilizing surface-bound assemblies for water-oxidation catalysis.
