Cyclohexanone ethylene ketal I was synthesized with cyclohexanone and glycol as the materials, and the catalytic activity of phosphotungstic acid/silica gel catalyst in ketol reaction was studied. According to the results, phosphotungstic acid/silica gel (SG) is a good catalyst for the synthesis of cyclohexanone ethylene ketal. The optimum synthesis conditions were identified: n (cyclohexanone):n (glycol) = 1:1.4, amount of water-carrying agent (i.e. cyclohexane): 8 mL, reaction time: 30 min. The yield of cyclohexanone ethylene ketal can reach 76.4% at such conditions.
