The synthesis and characterization of all 6 isomers of benzoylphenyl-1-methylpyrazole (I) (R = Ph, R1 = PhCO) are described. Thus, PhCOCH:CH2 was treated with PhCHN2 in Et2O to give 60% benzoylphenylpyrazoline II (R2 = H) which was treated with NaH and then MeI in Me2SO to give II (R2 = Me). Heating the latter II with S gave 69% the pyrazole III. The x-ray crystal structure of I (R = 4-Ph, R1 = 3-PhCO) is also reported.
