Chemical constituents from the mycelia of Antrodia cinnamomea

Asymmetric synthesis of (+)-allo-quercitol and (+)-talo-quercitol via free radical cycloisomerization of an enantiomerically pure alkyne-tethered aldehyde derived from a carbohydrate

We describe for the first time the free radical cyclization of enantiomerically pure alkyne-tethered aldehydes obtained from a carbohydrate (6, 7). The synthesis of compounds 6 and 7 obtained from a derivative of D-ribose is reported. These radical precursors have been submitted to cyclization with tributyltin hydride plus azobisisobutyronitrile to yield, after ring closure, two carbocycles, respectively. These carbocycles have been obtained as mixtures of E and Z vinyltin isomers, but with excellent diastereoselection at the new stereocenter formed during the ring closure. After protodestannylation, only one diastereomer was detected and isolated. The absolute configuration at the new stereocenter formed during the carbocyclization has been established by detailed H-1 NMR analysis. The specific transformation of 7-methoxymethoxy-2,2-dimethyl-4-methylene-5-tertbutyldimethylsilyloxy-(3aR,5S,7S,7aS)-perhydrobenzo[d][1,3]dioxole into optically pure (+)-allo-quercitol and (+)-talo-quercitol is described. From these results, we conclude that under an appropriate choice of radical precursors and conditions, the synthesis of highly functionalized cyclohexane derivatives of biological interest is now available.

High level ab initio and DFT calculations have been carried out for silacyclopent-2-ene and its 1,1-d(2), 1,1-difluoro, and 1,1-dichloro derivatives. The previously published far-infrared spectra of the ring-puckering vibration, which had been interpreted to be characteristic of a rigid planar molecule, have been reanalyzed for the hydride and 1,1-d(2) derivative. Both the spectra and the theoretical calculations show the molecule to have a small barrier to planarity. The experimental data analyzed with a Gaussian barrier produce a barrier of 49 cm(-1) as compared to a value of 47 cm(-1) computed using the CCSD/6-311++G(d,p) basis set. The experimental value for the deuteride was determined to be 41 cm(-1) from the one-dimensional approximation. All MP2 and DFT computations for the 1,1-difluoro derivative predict a planar structure whereas the MP2 computation when used with triple-zeta basis set predicts a barrier of 13 cm(-1) for the chloride. Fluorous Polymeric Membranes for Ionophore-Based Ion-Selective Potentiometry: How Inert Is Teflon AF?

Fluorous media are the least polar and polarizable condensed phases known. Their use as membrane materials considerably increases the selectivity and robustness of ion-selective electrodes (ISEs). In this research, a fluorous amorphous perfluoropolymer was used for the first time as a matrix for an ISE membrane. Electrodes for pH measurements with membranes composed of poly[4,5-difluoro-2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-dioxole]-co-poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (87% dioxole monomer content; known as Teflon AF2400) as polymer matrix, a linear perfluorooligoether as plasticizer, sodium tetrakis[3,5-bis(perfluorohexyl)phenyl]borate providing for ionic sites, and bis[(perfluorooctyl)propyl]-2,2,2-trifluoroethylamine as H+ ionophore were investigated. All electrodes had excellent potentiometric selectivities, showed Nernstian responses to H+ over a wide pH range, exhibited enhanced mechanical stability, and maintained their selectivity over at least 4 weeks. For membranes of low ionophore concentration, the polymer affected the sensor selectivity noticeably at polymer concentrations exceeding 15%. Also, the membrane resistance increased quite strongly at high polymer concentrations, which cannot be explained by the Mackie-Meares obstruction model. The selectivities and resistances depend on the polymer concentration because of a functional group associated with Teflon AF2400, with a concentration of one functional group per 854 monomer units of the polymer. In the fluorous environment of these membranes, this functional group binds to Na+, K+, Ca2+, and the unprotonated ionophore with binding constants of 10(3.5), 10(1.8), 10(6.8), and 10(4.4) M-1, respectively. Potentiometric and spectroscopic evidence indicates that these functional groups are COCH groups formed by the hydrolysis of carboxylic acid fluoride (COF) groups originally present in Teflon AF2400. The use of higher ionophore concentrations removes the undesirable effect of these COOH groups almost completely. Alternatively, the C(=O)F groups can be eliminated chemically, or they can be used to readily introduce new functionalities.

Preparation of Hyflon AD60/PVDF composite hollow fiber membranes for vacuum membrane distillation

Hydrophobic membrane is desired to avoid pore wetting phenomenon in membrane distillation (MD). In the present paper, highly hydrophobic Hyflon AD60/PVDF composite hollow fiber membranes were prepared by coating a copolymer (Hyflon AD60) of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) and 2,2,4-trifluoro-5-trifluoro methoxy-1,3-dioxole (TTD) on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes. The effects of Hyflon AD60 concentration, coating time, heat-treatment temperature and heat-treatment time on the structures and performances of Hyflon AD60/PVDF composite hollow fiber membranes in vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) process were investigated. The results show that the hydrophobicity of PVDF hollow fiber membrane was significantly improved by coating Hyflon AD60. The optimized Hyflon AD60 concentration, coating time, heat-treatment temperature and heat-treatment time were 0.1 wt%, 10-20 min, 40-50 degrees C and 9 h, respectively. Employing NaCl solution with concentration of 35 g x L-1, under a vacuum of 0.09 MPa and feed temperature of 70 degrees C, the water flux and salt rejection of the composite hollow fiber membrane in VMD process reached to approximately 10 kg x m(-2) x h(-1) and higher than 99.9 %, respectively, and kept stable, indicating that Hyflon AD60/PVDF composite membrane is an excellent candidate for operation in VMD operation. PROCESSABLE FLUORINATED ACRYLIC RESINS WITH LOW DIELECTRIC-CONSTANTS

The preparation of a new class of processable heavily fluorinated acrylic resins with very low dielectric constants is described. The title compounds 2 and 5 were prepared through the condensation of the respective alcohols 1 and 4 with acryloyl chloride. Unlike tetrafluoroethylene, monomers 2 and 5 are easy to process into polymers under normal conditions due to their liquid or semisolid nature. Radical polymerization of the title compounds with a trace amount of azobisisobutyronitrile or methyl ethyl ketone peroxide at 85-100 degrees C leads to homopolymers 3 and 6 and copolymer 7. All polymers exhibit dielectric constants around 2.10-2.24 over a frequency region of 500 MHz to 18.5 GHz; the variation of dielectric constant values over the measured frequency region is within 0.03 for each polymer. These values are very close to the minimum known dielectric constants of 2.0-2.08 for poly(tetrafluoroethylene) and 1.89-1.93 for a terpolymer of 2,2-bis-(trifluoromethyl)-4,5-difluoro-1,3-dioxole 8, perfluoropropylene and tetrafluoroethylene 9. The dielectric constants for poly(tetrafluoroethylene) measured with the same method are observed to be around 1.96-1.99 in order to validate the accuracy of our measurement

Design and Synthesis of 5-Substituted Benzo[d][1,3]dioxole Derivatives as Potent Anticonvulsant Agents

A series of 5- substituted benzo[d][1,3] dioxole derivatives was designed, synthesized, and tested for anticonvulsant activity using the maximal electroshock (MES) and subcutaneous pentylenetetrazole (scPTZ) screens. Neurotoxicity was determined by rotarod test. In the preliminary screening, six compounds, 3a, 3c, 3d, and 4d- f, showed promising anticonvulsant activities in the MES model, and compounds 4c and 4d exhibited full protection against seizures at doses of 300 mg/kg in the scPTZ model. Among the synthesized compounds, 3c as the most active compound showed high protection against the MES- induced seizures with an ED50 value of 9.8 mg/kg and a TD50 value of 229.4 mg/kg after intraperitoneal injection into mice, thus providing compound 3c with a high protective index (TD50/ED50) of 23.4 comparable to those of reference antiepileptic drugs.
