Electrochemical Behavior and Antioxidant Activity of Hibalactone

Hydrocotyle umbellata L. is a groundcover plant that has been used in the folk medicine of Argentina, Brazil, Cuba e India, mainly to reduce inflammatory processes. The lignan, hibalactone, can be isolated from the roots of the plant. In the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of such natural products, it is believed that the mechanism of action involves the butyrolactone ring, which would act as free pharmacophore. In this study, electrochemical, spectrometric and computational chemistry approaches were used to evaluate the lignan antioxidant activity and electro-oxidation pathway. Electrochemical measurements were performed in a 3 mL cell, operated in a three electrode system, consisting in an Ag/AgCl reference electrode, platinum as counter electrode and glassy carbon electrode was used as working electrode. Radical scavenging assays were performed with DPPH and ABTS. In the computational chemistry approach geometry, optimization was performed with semi empirical calculations (PM3) and the orbitals/charges calculations were performed by the extended Huckel method. The voltammetry showed a very slight variation with pH alteration, which can be justified by lactone hydrolysis that occurs in acidic and basic pH. In the HOMO and total charge density distribution it was possible to observe that the higher prevalence was in the benzo[1,3]dioxole rings and in the alkenes/alkanes in proximity with the lactone ring. The hibalactone displayed a single quasi-reversible electro-oxidation. Given the HOMO and charge density distribution in the lignan, more so the single oxidation in the evaluated potential, it is reasonable to infer that the alkene bonded with the lactone ring was a probable site of oxidation.

Impact of the Gate Dielectric on Contact Resistance in High-Mobility Organic Transistors

The impact of the gate dielectric on contact resistance in organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) is investigated using electrical characterization, bias-stress stability measurements, and bandgap density of states (DOS) analysis. Two similar dielectric materials, namely Cytop and poly[4,5-difluoro-2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-dioxole-co-tetrafluoroethylene] (Teflon AF2400), are tested in top-gate bottom-contact OTFTs. The contact resistance of Cytop-based OTFTs is found to be greater than that of the AF2400-based devices, even though the metal/OSC interface remains identical in both systems. The Cytop devices are also found to perform worse in bias-stress stability tests which, along with the DOS calculations, suggests that charge trapping at the OSC/dielectric interface is more prevalent with Cytop than AF2400. This increased charge trapping at the Cytop OSC/dielectric interface appears to be associated with the higher contact resistance in Cytop OTFTs. Differences in the molecular structure between Cytop and AF2400 and the large difference in the glass transition temperature of the two polymers may be responsible for the observed difference in the transistor performance. Overall, this study highlights the importance of the gate dielectric material in the quest for better performing OTFTs and integrated circuits.

Mucroniferanines A-G, lsoquinoline Alkaloids from Corydalis mucronifera

Five pairs of isoquinoline alkaloid enantiomers, mucroniferanines A-E (1-5), two inseparable epimeric pairs, mucroniferanines F and G (6, 7), and 10 known isoquinoline alkaloids (8-17) were obtained from Corydalis mucronifera. The structures were characterized using spectroscopic data analysis, and the absolute configurations were established by ECD and X-ray data analysis. The new compounds except for 3 possess a rare 9 methyl group in the isoquinoline alkaloids, and compounds 2 and 3 possess rare benzo[1,2-d:3,4-d]bis[1,3]dioxole moieties. It is the first report of stereoisomerism involving the 9-methyl phthalideisoquinoline alkaloids. Compounds (-)-4, 6, and 7 exhibited acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activities with IC50 values of 28.3, 12.2, and 11.3 mu M, respectively.

Diphenyl-benzo[1,3]dioxole-4-carboxylic acid pentafluorophenyl ester: a convenient catechol precursor in the synthesis of siderophore vectors suitable for antibiotic Trojan horse strategies

Catechols are components of many metal-chelating compounds, including siderophores that are naturally occurring iron(III) chelators excreted by microorganisms. Catechol derivatives are poorly soluble in organic media and the synthesis of catechol-containing molecules requires the use of protected catechol precursors with improved organic solubility. We therefore developed 2,2-diphenyl-benzo[1,3]dioxole-4-carboxylic acid pentafluorophenyl ester. This activated ester reacts with an amine functionalized scaffold to generate chelators in which the catechol functions are protected in the form of diphenyl-benzodioxole moieties. The catechol can subsequently be deprotected, at the end of the synthesis, with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). This strategy was applied to the synthesis of two catechol compounds functionalized with a terminal propargyl extension. These two compounds were shown to promote iron uptake in Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These two compounds are suitable for use as vectors in antibiotic Trojan horse approaches, as they could be conjugated with azide-functionalized antibiotics using the Huisgen dipolar 1,3-cycloaddition.

Orobanche and Phelipanche species (the broomrapes) are root parasitic plants, some of which represent serious weed problems causing heavy yield losses on important crops. Current control relies on the use of certain agronomic practices, resistant crop varieties, and herbicides, albeit success has been marginal. Agronomic practices such as the use of allelopathic species in intercropping or cover crops, or the use of direct seedling over residues of allelopathic species incorporate the principle of allelopathy exerted by molecules exuded from roots or released by crop residues to control broomrapes. In addition, the isolation of natural substances from root exudates of plants with potential to inhibit broomrape development opens the door to the design of new herbicides based on natural and benign sources. Ryecyanatines A and B and ryecarbonitrilines A and B, the first new substituted cyanatophenol, substituted cyanatobenzo[1,3]dioxole, and the latter two new substituted benzo[1,3]dioxolecarbonitriles were isolated from rye (Secale cereale L.) root exudates. They were characterized as 4-cyanato-2-methoxyphenol, 2-cyanato-benzo[1,3]dioxole, 2-methoxybenzo[1,3]dioxole-5-carbonitrile and benzo[1,3]dioxole-2-carbonitrile by spectroscopic (essentially NMR and HRESI MS spectra) methods. These compounds were investigated for allelopathic activity on Orobanche germination and development. Ryecarbonitriline A induced germination of Orobanche cumana seeds, and this germination can be considered as suicidal because O. cumana does not parasite rye roots and cannot survive without host resources beyond germination stage. In addition, ryecyanatine A promotes a rapid cessation of O. cumana, Orobanche crenata and Orobanche minor radicle growth with the promotion of a layer of papillae at the radicle tip in O. cumana and O. crenata hampering the contact of the parasite to the host. Preparation of Hyflon AD60/PVDF composite hollow fiber membranes for vacuum membrane distillation

Hydrophobic membrane is desired to avoid pore wetting phenomenon in membrane distillation (MD). In the present paper, highly hydrophobic Hyflon AD60/PVDF composite hollow fiber membranes were prepared by coating a copolymer (Hyflon AD60) of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) and 2,2,4-trifluoro-5-trifluoro methoxy-1,3-dioxole (TTD) on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes. The effects of Hyflon AD60 concentration, coating time, heat-treatment temperature and heat-treatment time on the structures and performances of Hyflon AD60/PVDF composite hollow fiber membranes in vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) process were investigated. The results show that the hydrophobicity of PVDF hollow fiber membrane was significantly improved by coating Hyflon AD60. The optimized Hyflon AD60 concentration, coating time, heat-treatment temperature and heat-treatment time were 0.1 wt%, 10-20 min, 40-50 degrees C and 9 h, respectively. Employing NaCl solution with concentration of 35 g x L-1, under a vacuum of 0.09 MPa and feed temperature of 70 degrees C, the water flux and salt rejection of the composite hollow fiber membrane in VMD process reached to approximately 10 kg x m(-2) x h(-1) and higher than 99.9 %, respectively, and kept stable, indicating that Hyflon AD60/PVDF composite membrane is an excellent candidate for operation in VMD operation.
