Long-range force of attraction between solvophobic surfaces in water and organic liquids containing dissolved air

An atomic force microscope has been employed to measure the force of interaction between a micron-sized colloidal sphere and a flat plate, both coated with a copolymer of perfluoro(2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxole) and tetrafluoroethylene (Teflon AF1600) in water, glycerol, formamide, ethylene glycol, ethylammonium nitrate, formic acid, ethanol, methanol, diiodomethane, 1-bromonaphthalene, hexadecane, and hexane. A long-range force of attraction was measured in water and, with the exception of the n-alkanols and n-alkanes, all the organic liquids. The results indicate that there is a macroscopic long-range attraction between solvophobic surfaces that has a different origin from that of the hydrophobic interaction observed at the molecular level, The results also indicate that there is a solvophobic force that is not due to either orientational ordering propagated by hydrogen bonds, electrostatic (or polarization) effects, or condensates of loosely attached surface material; all mechanisms that have been invoked previously to explain the macroscopic hydrophobic force. The force curves measured in the organic liquids provide a new perspective which is consistent with the hypothesis that submicroscopic air bubbles adhering to the macroscopic surfaces are responsible for a long-range attraction.

Amorphous Teflons AF as organophilic pervaporation materials transport of individual components

Permeation and sorption of various organic liquids (chlorinated hydrocarbons, lower alcohols, hydrocarbons, etc.) in amorphous copolymers of 2,2-bis-trifluoromethyl-4,5-difluoro-1,3-dioxole and tetrafluoroethylene (amorphous Teflons AF) were studied in the temperature range 5-95 degreesC. Based on permeation rate and solubility coefficients, the diffusion coefficients of organic penetrants in AF copolymers AF were estimated. It was shown that the copolymer with a higher content (87%) of the dioxole component (AF2400), as distinguished by a larger free volume, is much more permeable to liquids than the copolymer AF1600 containing 65% of the dioxole comonomer. In contrast, solubility of organic compounds in both copolymers is hardly affected by their composition. The effects of penetrant parameters, such as critical volume (V-c) and critical temperature (T-c) were analyzed. The variation in permeation rates of liquids and gases through these materials are consistent with a mobility (diffusion) controlled mechanism for mass transfer. A trade-off between the Arrhenius parameters for permeability and the van’t Hoff parameters for solubility is demonstrated for pervaporation. On this basis, novel correlations are obtained that enable a determination of the activation energy for permeation E-p and the enthalpy of sorption H-S from the permeability (P) and solubility (S) coefficients. Long term tests (up to 12 months) showed excellent time stability of the transport parameters, a property unexpected and quite important for a high flux, high free volume pervaporation material. Gas and vapor transport properties of amorphous perfluorinated copolymer membranes based on 2,2-bistrifluoromethyl-4,5-difluoro-1,3-dioxole/tetrafluoroethylene

Teflon AF 2400 (Du Pont) is an amorphous, glassy perfluorinated copolymer containing 87 mol% 2,2-bistrifluoromethyl-4,5-difluoro-1,3-dioxole and 13 mol% tetrafluoroethylene. The polymer has an extremely high fractional free volume of 0.327. Permeability coefficients for helium, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, methane, ethane, propane, and chlorodifluoromethane (Freon 22) were determined at temperatures from 25 to 60 degrees C and pressures from 20 to 120 psig. Permeation properties were also determined at a feed pressure of 200 psig at 25 degrees C with a 2 mol% n-butane/98 mol% methane mixture. Permeabilities of permanent gases in Teflon AF 2400 are among the highest of all known polymers; the oxygen permeability coefficient at 25 degrees C is 1600 x 10(-10) cm(3)(STP) cm/cm(2) s cmHg and the nitrogen permeability coefficient is 780 X 10(-10) cm(3)(STP) cm/cm(2) s cmHg. The permeabilities of organic vapors increase up to 20-fold as the vapor activity increases from 0.1 to unity, indicating that Teflon AF 2400 is easily plasticized. Although Teflon AF 2400 is an ultrahigh-free-volume polymer like poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne) [PTMSP], their gas permeation properties differ significantly. Teflon AF 2400 shows gas transport behavior similar to that of conventional, low-free-volume glassy polymers. PTMSP, on the other hand, acts more like a nanoporous carbon than a conventional glassy polymer.
