Bobyleva, L. I. published the artcileProduction of propylene glycol, Safety of 2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-dioxolane, the publication is Khimicheskaya Promyshlennost (Moscow, Russian Federation) (1990), 710-11, database is CAplus.
Addition of Me2CO to the reaction mixture in the acid-catalyzed hydration of propylene oxide (I) to propylene glycol (II) in aqueous solution significantly increased selectivity for II, suppressed II polymer formation, and shifted the reaction toward the formation of equilibrium II mixtures with 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-dioxolane, which was subsequently hydrolyzed to II during product recovery. H3PO4 was chosen as the catalyst instead of H2SO4 due to its lower corrosiveness. At reaction temperature 100° and reaction time 15 min, the highest selectivities for II were obtained at Me2CO concentration 20-40% and I concentration 10-15% in the reaction mixture, and maximum II yields were obtained at H3PO4 concentration 0.075-0.125%. I conversion 96-100% and II selectivity 95-100% were obtained by I hydration at 95-100° for 15 min at initial concentrations I 10-12.5, H2O 50-60, Me2CO 30-40, and H3PO4 0.1%.
Khimicheskaya Promyshlennost (Moscow, Russian Federation) published new progress about 1193-11-9. 1193-11-9 belongs to dioxole, auxiliary class Dioxolanes, name is 2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-dioxolane, and the molecular formula is C6H12O2, Safety of 2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-dioxolane.
