Three triphenylmaine dyes, namely MX11-13, have been designed and synthesized, which incorporate 2,2,6,6-tetramethylbenzol[,2-d:4,5-d’]bis[1,3]dioxole (TMBD), phenyl and 1,4-dipropoxybenzene (DPB) as pi-conjugated spacer, respectively. The effects of alkoxy substituent upon the photophysical, electro-chemical characteristics and performance of dye-sensitized solar cells are investigated. For a typical device, the MX13-based cell affords an overall power conversion efficiency (eta) of 7.02%, with short-circuit photocurrent density (J(SC)), open-circuit voltage (V(OC)) and fill factor (if) of 15.5 mA cm(-2), 697 mV and 0.65, respectively. Synthesis of Thermally Stable Aromatic Poly(spiroorthocarbonate)s Having a Cardo or Bent Structure

Novel poly(spiroorthocarbonate)s [poly(SOC)]s having a Cardo or bent structure were synthesized by polycondensation of several bis-catechols having fluorene (BCFL), spirobisindane (BCSPI), or spirobischromane (BCSPC) in the structure with 2,2,6,6-tetrachlorobenzo[1,2-d:4,5-d’]bis[1,3]dioxole (4ClBD). Synthesis of poly(SOC)s was confirmed by NMR and IR spectrometry. The poly(SOC)s obtained from BCFL or BCSPC were soluble in common organic solvents. The glass transition temperature of the poly(SOC)s was not detected by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) in the range of 50-300 degrees C. The 10 wt % decomposition temperature of the poly(SOC) s was found to be above 400 degrees C. These results indicated the high thermal stability of the poly(SOC)s. Soluble poly(SOC) s could be possessed to form a film on a glass plate by the spin coat method. The obtained polymer films were 0.2 mu m in thickness with 95% light transmission in the optical wavelength range. These results suggested that the Cardo or bent structure may block the packing of the main-chain of the structure, which improves the solubility of the polymers, increases transparency, and enhances the thermal stability of SOCs. Energy Transfer between Tm-Doped Upconverting Nanoparticles and a Small Organic Dye with Large Stokes Shift

Lanthanide-doped upconverting nanoparticles (UCNP) are being extensively studied for bioapplications due to their unique photoluminescence properties and low toxicity. Interest in RET applications involving UCNP is also increasing, but due to factors such as large sizes, ion emission distributions within the particles, and complicated energy transfer processes within the UCNP, there are still many questions to be answered. In this study, four types of core and core-shell NaYF4-based UCNP co-doped with Yb3+ and Tm3+ as sensitizer and activator, respectively, were investigated as donors for the Methyl 5-(8-decanoylbenzo[1,2-d:4,5-d ‘]bis([1,3]dioxole)-4-yl)-5-oxopentanoate (DBD-6) dye. The possibility of resonance energy transfer (RET) between UCNP and the DBD-6 attached to their surface was demonstrated based on the comparison of luminescence intensities, band ratios, and decay kinetics. The architecture of UCNP influenced both the luminescence properties and the energy transfer to the dye: UCNP with an inert shell were the brightest, but their RET efficiency was the lowest (17%). Nanoparticles with Tm3+ only in the shell have revealed the highest RET efficiencies (up to 51%) despite the compromised luminescence due to surface quenching.

The far-infrared and Raman spectra of 1,3-benzodioxole vapor have been recorded and analyzed. Forty-one infrared and six Raman bands were assigned to transitions between the various ring-puckering energy levels in the ground and excited ring-napping states. The determination of the energy levels was assisted by analysis of the single vibronic level fluorescence spectra of the jet-cooled molecules. The puckering levels change substantially in the napping excited state, indicating substantial interaction between the two vibrational modes. From the spectroscopic data, a two-dimensional vibrational potential energy surface was determined. This has a barrier to planarity of 164 cm(-1) and energy minima at puckering and napping angles of +/-24 degrees and +/-3 degrees, respectively. This molecule has a lower barrier to planarity than 1,3-dioxole, reflecting the influence of the benzene ring on the anomeric effect. Nevertheless, the anomeric effect is clearly the origin of the nonplanarity of this bicyclic ring system.

Quantum chemical and master equation studies of the methyl vinyl carbonyl oxides formed in isoprene ozonolysis

Methyl vinyl carbonyl oxide is an important intermediate in the reaction of isoprene and ozone and may be responsible for most of the (OH)-O-center dot formed in isoprene ozonolysis. We use CBS-QB3 calculations and RRKM/ master equation simulations to characterize all the pathways leading to the formation of this species, all the interconversions among its four possible conformers, and all of its irreversible isomerizations. Our calculations, like previous studies, predict (OH)-O-center dot yields consistent with experiment if thermalized syn-methyl carbonyl oxides form (OH)-O-center dot quantitatively. Natural bond order analysis reveals that the vinyl group weakens the C=O bond of the carbonyl oxide, making rotation about this bond accessible to this chemically activated intermediate. The vinyl group also allows one conformer of the carbonyl oxide to undergo electrocyclization to form a dioxole, a species not previously considered in the literature. Dioxole formation, which has a CBS-QB3 reaction barrier of 13.9 kcal/mol, is predicted to be favored over vinyl hydroperoxide formation, dioxirane formation, and collisional stabilization. Our calculations also predict that two dioxole derivatives, 1.2-epoxy-3-butanone and 3-oxobutanal, should be major products of isoprene ozonolysis.

Effect of amorphous fluorinated coatings on photocatalytic properties of anodized titanium surfaces

The photocatalytic activity promoted by anodized titanium surfaces coated with different amorphous perfluoropolymers was evaluated. A copolymer between tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoro-4-trifluoromethoxy-1,3-dioxole and two perfluoropolyethers containing ammonium phosphate and triethoxysilane functionalities, respectively, were tested as coating materials. These coatings revealed good adhesion to the anodized titanium substrate and conferred to it both hydrophobicity and oleophobicity. The photocatalytic activity of the coating on anodized titanium was evaluated by monitoring the degradation of stearic acid via Infrared spectroscopy. The degradation rate of stearic acid was reduced but not set to zero by the presence of the fluorinated coatings, leading to the development of advanced functional coatings.
